I was expecting a dark and violent crime story and this delivered that. I'm a big fan of Ivan's previous book, NYC Mech, so I was very excited to read more from him. And this was definately interesting. I'm not sure if this one caught me or not. It had elements I liked, and good dialogue, but the characters and the story itself I'm still unsure about. I will keep reading though, I want to see where this goes.
The art is classic Oeming goodness. One thing, I'm always a little suprised by how gruesome Oeming likes to get sometimes. I know, I know. With as often as he he gets excessively graphic and gorey in Powers I should be used to it by now, right? But there is something mildly shocking about his clean cartoony art style depicting characters intestines exposed or skulls smashed open and brains splattered around, never fails to get me.
A score is a little hard because this is definately not a good standalone issue, it's a slice of a bigger picture and it's hard to grade issues like that. I guess I'd go with an
8 - it did hook me in for more. I think it might read better as a trade though, all at once instead of in chapters.
