I have been lurking here for a few weeks and thought I should finally register. I'm a lifelong DC reader; not a fan of Marvel.
Several years ago, a guy I worked with who was into comics hands me a copy of "Who Killed Retro Girl?" and tells me I have to read it. I did and loved it. I have been getting Powers ever since. It's always at the top of my list and one of the few books I just can't wait to read as soon as I get it.
So now it's years later and a few weeks ago, a guy I work with (different job) says that he wants to start reading comics again and wants to know what is good. I give him my Retro GIrl TPB and of course, he loves it. He borrowed the rest of my collection and read the series almost non-stop for the next few days after work.
It's a win-win situation all the way around. I feel like I have paid it forward, and I now have someone to have geeky discussions with. He found a new series he loves. BMB, Mike Oeming and Icon/Marvel have a new fan. It even made me finally get around to bagging and boarding my Powers comics.
So that got me on a real Powers kick lately. I'm working on several Powers fun art projects and managed to get any stories I was missing (like the Wizard Edge 8-page exclusive). Checking Google for Powers-related material, I found the following review:
http://www.silverbulletcomicbooks.co...2438711437.htm that contained a curious line: "..the David Mack designed Zora,.."
I knew that characters were created for "Who killed Retro Girl" by several creators and wanted to confirm this info. I then found the following post by David Mack:
http://www.comicscommunity.com/board...mes;read=19027 where he states, "That was 93. I was 20. It was my first Chicago con ever, and I've attended every year since.
Bendis and I met at that con too." And goes on to describe a set of trading cards that included Zora.
Obviously, if Zora was in the card set that was avaialbe at this Con in 93 and he met BMB there, he couldn't have created Zora. Completist that I am, I checked ebay. A $1.95 (plus shipping) later, I now have the card set. These cards were released in 1993 by Majestic Entertainment and were meant to showcase new talent for the year.
Without further adieu, presented here for (hopefully) the first time, here is the first appearance of Zora from the 1993 card. Art by BMB:
Obviously, the continuity isn't even close, but I am assuming that Zora's secret identity was still "Kim Stevens" in the Powers universe. Also, notice the the pic of BMB on the back of the card with a full head of hair!
Interestingly enough, there was a character called Triphammer in the card set, but is nothing remotely close to the Powers version, as you can plainly see:
And since this is the Jinxword forums, here is Mack's Kabuki in her debut pic:
Hope you all enjoy and I'll see you around on the boards!
