Sentry vs. Gladiator

Sentry:

Pros - has some "power of a thousand suns" thing going on that I don't really understand - but in New Avengers, Reed is purported to have said he's the most powerful being on Earth.

Cons - Something bad is supposed to happen when he uses his power - or he's just crazy. Either way, you gotta wonder about him.

Gladiator:

Pros - Faith-based powers - basically, if he believes he can do something, he can. Kinda like Superman, but with more potential.

Cons - Lame mowhawk haircut. Shi'ar lapdog mentality.

Re: Sentry vs. Gladiator

It's hard to say. Although Sentry has stated in NA the 1000 suns thing...that doesn't mean that it is true. It might turn out that his wife being dead, the void, the extent of his powers, all of it isn't quite what we've been led to believe. So until it is quanitfied a little better I'm going to have to go with Gladiator (as written by Byrne).

Re: Sentry vs. Gladiator

Yeah, my concept of Gladiator is based on the Dark Phoenix saga - and then New X-men (where the faith-based thing was mentioned by Cassandra Nova)

The Cannonball thing must've been a fluke

Byrne extrapolated the faith-based thing originally in FF issues #249-250.

Re: Sentry vs. Gladiator

This has just been added to... THE EXPERIMENT!!!
(Hussah! A new versus poll!!!)

As for the fight, hmm... well, this is definitely a most worthy match up!

The realm problem with a guy like the Sentry, is the fact that the extent of his powers have been so vaguely defined. Essentially, we're led to believe he can do damn near anything!

Gladiator is undoubtedly one of the toughest competitors in comics.
However, as I've mentioned in another thread, I think certain types of characters lend themselves to defeating another character better. I don't think Gladiator, who although relatively versatile, is going to be able to take Sentry, as mostly a power player.

Be interested to see how this one turns out, though!

Re: Sentry vs. Gladiator

Ok, Cannonball out thought Gladiator. He knew that Gladiator's power level was based on his level of self-confidence. So when Galdiator hits Sam with a punch that should have "sent him into orbit", Sam used his blast field to dissipate the kenetic energy of the punch. Which psyched out Gladiatoir. and while he's standing there with his mouth hanging open, his self-confidence at a low ebb, Sam nails him. It was beautifuly done.
Cannonball is criminally underused at this point.
