BB Review Group week 101 - The Damned #1 (spoilers)

Ok guys, this week we're doing something a little different!

RandyOni has made an extremely generous offer to us - he has provided us with a preview copy of the new Oni book The Damned #1 by Cullen Bunn and Brian Hurtt to review this week!

You can find it here: http://www.onipress.com/bendisboard/...iew_secure.pdf

(Note: this is a 23 meg PDF)

If you do take him up on the offer and read it I would ask that you have the courtesy to give him some feedback afterwards. If you are not comfortable reviewing or grading then please at least drop a few comments, ask a question, something.

If you have read the book we are reviewing please feel welcome and join in the reviews and discussions.

Re: BB Review Group week 101 - The Damned #1 (spoilers)

I should first say that I'm a sucker for this kind of story in general. I love when an element of fantasy is introduced into the real world. Books like Sandman or Fables, where the setting is familiar but a twist of unreality is thrown in. I am also really getting into the detective and noir kind of thing lately too.

So I was immediately interested in this! And after reading it I'm still interested, this is a story I want to see play out. The first issue didn't make much clear in terms of what is going on in this world. The main character is undead and demons mingle with humans in a manner that seems common yet why that is is not explained. I'm guessing we won't get an explanation either, we are just suposed to accept it as the norm.

The issue is mostly one dialogue after another as the main characters situation and relationship is explained. Apparently when he dies he can come back to life if another soul takes his place in hell, limbo, somewhere. It's not clearly explained. And some mob bosses are using this to make Eddie thier tool in a power struggle. I was somewhat bored thru alot of it but I see that it was needed to set the stage and with the expected violent scene at the end of the issue I have hopes that the pace will pick up from this point on.

The art is top notch, I love it! I'm completely blown away, such a clean feel to it and these are great character designs. Fantastic!

As for a score I'd give this one an 8 and I'm looking forward to reading the rest of the series.

Re: BB Review Group week 101 - The Damned #1 (spoilers)

I read this a week or so ago and need to give it another read. This is not my type of read that I usually go for. It was somewhat similar to the Last Sin of Mark Grimm in that it was a crime comic with some demon like mob bosses. I enjoyed it overall, but like I said it just isn't my thing. I was entertained by the writing and the art though.

I really like the scenery that was in the comic. Most comics focus only on the main characters and avoid the settings, but this comic did not shy away from adding cars that fit the period, and I commend the artist for that.

While I am not a fan of the demon-like mob people, I would be interested to find out what happens in further issues, and that is all a comic can hope for.

    Score: 7

Re: BB Review Group week 101 - The Damned #1 (spoilers)

I read the PDF on Monday (thank you Randy that was very generous).

I will do my best to give an honest review.

Honestly this is not the type of book I would normally pick up, so I was greatful to be given the chance to preview the book.

That being said I thought it was a good set up to the story, and the art was very good.

I really enjoyed the scenes in the afterlife with the creepy box demon trying to claim our hero's soul.

The mob stuff just kind of left me cold. I've seen lots of mafia movies and television shows, so I guess I've become desensitized to these type of stories.

I ususally like when the supernatural meets the hard boiled, but this story kind of hit me as more End of Days then Angel Heart/Falling Angel

I do have a question though, is the world at large aware of the demons and supernatural stuff, or is it just a select few people?

Randy, thank you very much for the opportunity to read this book, but I'm not sure if I'll be picking up the rest of the series.

Here's my original review, with a rethought number:

Wow, that was really good. A perfect blending of genres, with some really nice moments that played up the relation between the two (that cigarette to the eye scene, for example). The art was excellent. He's a great storyteller, and I like his style too. I'll be keeping an eye out.

    Replay:
Demon gangsters! What's not to love!?!
It's great to see Brian Hurtt getting work after the sad demise of Hard Time and Cullen Bunn has crafted a great atmospheric story of what I assume is old Chicago.
    I'm on board.
    My score: 8.8.
