    Brubaker is unstoppable! (storyline spoilers)

Since becoming Marvel exclusive, Ed Brubaker has recently come out guns blazing. No other way to describe it. He's been with Marvel for a while, but recently he's turned it all the way up to 11 with his storylines. And he's done it very, very quietly. People who normally do not keep up with creators (many people simply read comics) are reading his comics and flipping back to the title page to see who wrote it. And the name they see is Brubaker. Daily I hear things like "what else has Brubaker done?" and "I'll buy anything Brubaker writes." He's succesfully followed up Bendis' DD, made Uncanny X-men into a flagship title again, and somehow made the Shiar interesting. Cap? What can I say? He's bringing the A-game and Marvel is letting him play. But he's very quiet about it. Maybe he's just modest, I dunno.

The reason I'm writing this (other than to be that guy) is because I love Captain America. The book has not been this good since Gruenwald/ Waid. But I was thinking to myself of all the random Captain America villains that pretty much nobody else but me would know or care about that I would love to see revisited, redefined, or just appear if the storyline warranted. I'm talking about the Ameridroid (giant Captain America robot!), TESS-1, Dr. Faustus, Red Skull's other thugs like Blackwing, Serpent Society-specifically King Cobra, Mr, Hyde, Flag Smasher, Cap's allies like Fabian whatshisname, M.O.D.O.K. himself, revisit the Scourge incident, etc. I know a few of these concepts have appeared elsewhere, but lo and behold Brubaker dusts one of these off and puts it out there in a very real way. Guy must be reading my mind! Keep up the great work and enjoy your success!

If you like Brubaker comics, speak up!

I guess we're talking his superhero stuff?

He's great. He plays totally within the sandbox of the titles and makes them work. There's no impact to the current trends and crossovers yet, meaning the main story totally stands on it's own and will still make compelling reads later. They take the elements of the characters, boil them down to their elements, and bring the stories out of that. This is why his Marvel stuff works for me every time.

I''ve said this before and I'll say it again, Brubaker is fucking awesome. The only thing from his Marvel run that didn't wow me from start to finish has been Books of Doom, and saying that, I still enjoyed it a ton. He's made me care about solo Cap for the first time and unlike EVERY writer to touch the franchise (yes, including Claremont, though he had moments I liked) he's made me care about "The X-Men.... IN SPACE!!". I fucking HATE intergalctic X-Men, but Bru has me loving it.

And then there's his Daredevil. I read all 13 trades of DD before reading Bru's and I have to say this. Bru's Daredevil is the best of them all. Not knocking Bendis, but this is how I view it.

Kevin Smith took Daredevil from cancellation and made him popular again.

David Mack came along and KEPT him popular.

Bendis arrived and bang, Daredevil was huge. However, making the character huge after him being just popular isn't really a tough thing for a good writer, and Bendis is more than just good.

Then Brubaker came along and did something I rarely see. He took a hugely popular character and amped up what had made him popular for the last few years, then surpassed it. The transition between writers was flawless. He kept the tone of Bendis's run but gave it his own stamp too.

Far as I'm concerned, right now, Bru can do no wrong. The man is excellent.

I'd never picked up a Capt. America book before he started. Brubaker has add a some dimension to Cap which is about time. He's not just a giant boy scout and the stuff with the Winter Solider has been cool.

Where I've really been blown away by Brubaker's work has been with Daredevil. His first story arc really knocked it out of the park, really paying off what Bendis had set in motion. It's the book I must read first and I haven't been disappointed.
I'm really looking forward to Criminal. His crime stuff is great. Finding Brubaker's older stuff is a bit of a task, but I've been able to track down a lot of them like--'At the Seams', 'Detour', 'Accidental Death', and 'Scene of a Crime'.
    All great stuff.
The only thing I haven't been able to find 'Batman: The Man Who Laughs' his Joker one shot. It's out of print and getting pricy on e-Bay.

Brubaker's current work is what excites me most in comics at the moment. Between the double whammy every month in Captain America and Daredevil, plus a spacefaring saga in Uncanny X-Men and Criminal with Sean Phillips on the horizon, I'm in heaven.

Captain America is probably my favorite current title. Daredevil is way up there. I can't wait for Criminal.

His Marvel work has been incredible, and I loved his run on Batman. He's probably one of the best superhero writers working, neck and neck with Bendis, Johns, and Buseik.

    He is amazing.

I think his Captain America is the best the book has ever been, including Stan Lee & Stern/ Byrne.

I'm currently hunting down every Batman issue of his I can get.

Re: Brubaker is unstoppable! (storyline spoilers)

Brubaker is the best writer in comics right now. He respects what has come before, unlike just about every other writer today who ignores it or tries to retell it their way. I feel like I get my money's worth. He made Captain America cooler than shit, and didn't resort to changing the character like Mark Millar is trying to do. Bru doesn't feel the need to make Cap an "ugly American cowboy" who thinks with his fists.

His Cap will be remembered in years to come as the defining run on the character. The run that set the standard and blueprint for the character, much like Miller did with Daredevil. Bru's Daredevil is excellent, too.

I'm not all that high on his X-Men. I wish he would have just said no, but how do you say no to something like that? It's not bad or anything, but it's not at the same level as his DD and Cap writing is, and Billy Tan is medicore. The fill-ins completely killed the momentum, and I found myself bored and ready for the next team pretty quickly.

Cap and Daredevil are awesome, though, and I don't want him to leave either book for years!

Talk whatever you want. Sleeper, um..what was that Vertigo 4 part deal? Scene of the Crime? Was that him?

I actually haven't read Sleeper or Gotham Central. I keep meaning to get to them, but something else gets in front of them...
