You open up all the backgrounds for the touch screen. There's a mushroom house that appears in the very beginning of world 1 once you finish the game. And each background costs a certain amount of coins.
It's really not worth it for the background, but it's worth it because they are fun to figure out how to get.

New Super Mario Brothers just came out a few months ago. It's for the Nintendo DS. I'm pretty sure that 1986 wasn't aware that this game would exist.Originally Posted by David the Mighty
Anyway, collecting all the big coins will gain you one of the three completion stars on your save file. It's pretty much just a way to extend the game life. I had fun going back for the few that I missed.

To answer your question...once you get all the coins you will have enough to open every extra path in the game that requires money. You will also be able to buy all of the wallpapers for the bottom screen. That's about it unfortunately.
