Most of the blacklisting and whatnot was thanks to William Randolph Hearst. It was pretty much debunked many times over, but Hearst kept on him to sell his papers. It's pretty sad, really.

I think Fatty got a bad rap and it's sad that he was blacklisted and had scandal follow his career. I think it's time to forgive the man. Oh, and Mel Gibson can eat a dick.

In the last trial (the 4th I believe) of the supposed "bottle rape" Fatty was cleared of all charges. The previous trials were always hung. Fatty was actually making movies again when he died of a heart attack at a young age. I believe he completed at least one movie, maybe more. This is all coming from memory. The book I have is packed in some box in the back room. There have always been rumors about what actually happened. There is a faction that claim that Fatty was set up by "Big Hollywood" because he was the first actor that could make demands and get them because of his popularity. He was the highest paid of his time and the producers didn't like that their share of the pie was getting smaller. Of course we shall never know. Everybody connected with it is now dead.
OVER 38,000 AND GOING STRONG
yeah, I just thought about it because some douchebag on MSNBC earlier mentioned Arbuckle while talking about Mel. I also watched some documentary on him last weekend on cable. Sad story really.

The Forgotten Films of Fatty Arbuckle is a cool DVD set to pick up if you've got 50 bones. Pretty neat stuff. He made a lot of shorts and even made one sound feature with Warner Bros/Vitaphone that was funnier than hell. If he'd lived longer, he'd have made an even bigger impression than he previously did.
In a great Keaton documentary , Buster says he learned everything about movie making from Arbuckle.
That's pretty touching actually.Originally Posted by sonnylarue
