Silent Hill - Theories and All That Jazz

So i've seen this movie twice now (the second time was against my will), and i'm still trying to figure out some things. Who else saw it? Gimme your theories on it! I'm a huge Silent Hill fan, but by no means am I a connoisseur, so forgive me if i'm missing something totally obvious. I did see a few cool things from the video games in the movie, and that made me smile (while cringing).

Anyhow, sorry, i'm sure there are a billion other Silent Hill threads, but mine is made out of confusion and need for theories on the film's story and ending etc etc. Was that how one of the games ended? Did they even stick to a game story at all? Even a little? I've only played a couple of the series, so I can't exactly say I know every story.

The movie was a very marginal re-telling of Silent Hill 1. The beginning scene, where Rose is in the alley, is a very accurate re-creation of how the game opens.

Then it's all downhill from there. They incorporate a few scenes from the games (and some cameos of characters from Silent Hill 2) every now and then, but it's largely a "whole new story".

The cult is absolutely nothing like they were in the game, in the game they were actually behind the creation of Alessa in an attempt to usher in a new Apocalypse.

The ending is nothing like any of the games' endings at all.

Yeah, actually I was really disappointed in that part, because that was one of my favorite elements of the game story! I had read up on the net a little of the stories for 1 and 2, and liked the whole storyline about Alessa being the one who was supposed to give birth to god or whatever. They weren't so much a cult in the movie as a bunch of religious zealots. That was really just disappointing.

By far. Making Dahlia a good guy (so to speak) and creating an evil sister character was just needlessly convuluted.

I was really pleased with the little girl they cast though. I'd seen her on Kingdom Hospital, but that was it. I'm glad to see she's making a name for herself, she's good at the horror stuff!

Th movie is loosely based on SH1, so it stands on its own... kind of.

I never played the games, and I enjoyed watching the movie. I really liked the ending too.

The ending was what confused me, though confused is the wrong word. I just had a lot of theories about the ending. I wondered what other people got from the ending, so I could compare my own ideas against what other people got. I actually did like the ending though, it was good but tragic at the same time.
