I was about to do a bought/thought post, because I read my stuff tonight, and I was pretty much gonna ask the same question. (hope someone has an answer)
The one SS book that just doesn't click with me at all.
Would a kind sould out there explain to me what happened in this book? I have no knowledge of the new gods and that sector of the DC Universe but was able to follow along with the series until the fourth issue

we should get drunk and attempt to reread it
i was pretty drunk last night and re-read the series. still clueless.
Well first off, the New Gods in this book are completely different from the ones previously seen in the DCU. Dark Side used to be a big rocky guy named Darkseid who shot Omega Beams out of his eyes, for instance.
I had to read the issue one and a half times to get it. I guess Dark Side's "Omega Sanction" just makes you live out hallucinations that get worse and worse until you, I dunno, die of old age or starvation or something. Looking at it this way, the Omega Sanction actually began in #3 just before the savager beatdown and castration. That hallucination led to MM's hallucinated "death" on the splash page at the beginning of issue #4; then he started having a series of hallucinations which got shorter and more depressing as time went on. But MM can escape from anything, even the Omega Sanction (or Life Trap as it was called at the end of #3); he managed to convince the sentient Life Trap to stop doing what it was doing and escape. Don't ask me how or why he appeared in the black hole though.
I can see how the framing sequence with MM as a kid could be confusing, as it might appear to be another hallucination. But actually I think those scenes really happened, think of them as LOST-esque flashbacks which help to explain a little of MM's origin.
whew. any questions?

The way I saw it, the entire series was either a halucination or a test by Metron. Cause the sereis ends with him coming out of the black hole that he went into in issue 1.
