Yeah, it differs from state to state.
There are days I wish we did the judge thing myself. My better half and I are getting married on June 3rd and between the headaches and draining of my bank account ($11,000 and counting!) we might have been beter off going to Vegas and getting married by Elvis.

Call me a penny-pincher, but, the cost for weddings alone make me not interested in having anything to do with it.

If I remember right, we had to go in once (with all proper documentation) to get the license, wait the required amount of time (72 hrs I think) and then had 30 or 60 days to go back for the actual marriage by the judge. I don't remember making an actual appointment, we just called to see when the judge was available for marriages and we went down and got on the list for the day. I'm sure it differs by county and state, but that's how it worked for us...I think.
I'm so happy we did it that way. Several friends have gone through/are going through the long drawn out wedding process and I know that I wouldn't have wanted to go that route. Luckily for me, my wife felt the same way. The only change I might have made would have been to do the Vegas thing if we had wanted to wait until we had the funds for that. Since we didn't have much money at the time, we just went to the courthouse.
How else would I be able to say that right before us, the groom was brought out in an orange jumpsuit and full hand and feet shackles to marry his bride? He was about to be tried for capital murder and if convicted, would never get out of prison. The judge tried to talk the bride out of it, but she went through with it anyway. Afterwards, he told us that he saw many people do that and it was always rough on him...he was much happier marrying nice, FREE couples like my wife and I.
Here's some info I just found on the Travis Co. (Texas) Court Marriage Requirements:
Office Hours: 8:00 am to 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday.
1. $41.00 in cash. Sorry, no checks!
2. Identification. Both bride and groom must bring identification. Accepted forms of identification include
a certified copy of the applicant's birth certificate; or
a certificate, license, or document issued by this state, another state, the United States, or a foreign government.
3. Social Security Number. You need not bring your social security card, but you must know the number.
4. If you have divorced
and your divorce was final within the last 30 days, you must bring a certified copy of your divorce decree which states the thirty day waiting period has been waived.
and you wish to use your maiden name on the license, you will need to provide a certified copy of her birth certificate or a certified copy of her divorce decree that states her name is to be changed to her maiden name.
Hope that helps!
