Scott, you can supiment your income on EBAY. Just draw some mainstream characters and put them up- especially the girls. You can get anywhere from 30- 90 a piece, and thats without anyone knowing who you are, people just want good characters. Say you do commissions in your listings too, you'll build up an ebay following.
I did that for awhile and it helped out tons when I had no career
