I can't believe you were going to ship it before getting his credit card info.
Today I got a little bit testy.
Maybe its the fact that I am on the damn patch, but this rubbed me the wrong way.
About a week ago, we had a guy call our store (in Boston).
He asked if we had a copy of Looking Glass Wars: Hatter M #1.
I told him that we were out, but we were doing reorders and expected the book in next week (which would be today).
He then told me he lived in Florida, and would like the book mailed to him.
My boss normally doesn't do 'mail order' stuff, but the guy was talking about how he used to live in Boston and would come to the shop a lot. He also said that he checks our websites new arrivals every week (to this day), because his shop is late in updating their site.
I got his number and address, and asked him if he thought it would be something he could get locally. He said 'no, my shop doesn't carry that type of stuff, but I knew you guys would, so I thought I would give you the business."
I thought that was very nice, and promised to call him when the reorders came in. (that was last tuesday)
We got our reorders today, I packed it up, and told my boss to run to the post office and ship it out, and then we would call the guy to get his credit card information.
My boss says "why should I mail it out before speaking to him?". I said 'well, then you will know how much the shipping is going to be."
My boss said "watch this"
and he called the guy and identified himself, and said that the reorders came in and that his book was ready to be shipped.
He then pauses, and goes "oh, okay, so you already picked one up from your store? So you don't need us to mail it to you?"
I went ballistic (I was reshelving books at the time).
"but he called all the way from Florida talking about how wonderful we were, and how he needed the book."
my boss hangs up the phone and says "He said that he 'forgot' that he called us and got the book elsewhere."
Pissed me off. I said to my boss "what if that was like a walking dead omnibus or something else? I can't believe that!!"
My boss says "NOW do you see why I don't bother with people who call me up and want me to order books and mail them out?"
Sadly, I could see his point, and understood why he was so resistent to me going 'this guy called and wants us to ship out this book when we get it back in"
Oh well, a lesson learned.
What a loser.

yeah, I guess it was stupid to ship it before I got his info, but I just took the guy at his word, and thought I was doing something 'good' for him.
Luckily, this experience hasn't changed my stellar customer service attitude.
I applaud the fact that you guys would go the extra mile for the customer. Not many stores would do that.
