    I hate bill collectors

I was out of work for a year and I incurred some debt, both here, at the bank, with the credit card company, and here at home.

Still paying them off. But, there was one that I had missed, and tonight, I got nailed.

Basically, I was told I was being taken to court for over 1,000 bucks I owe a credit card company.

I told them I could pay 300 bucks a month. I was then put through to accounting where I was told that on good faith to show that I would pay that 300 a month, I would have to put down a larger payment of over 500 first, and then the company would agree to the 300 dollar a month payment.

Despite the fact that I told them repeatedly, they told me they could waive the larger payment rule, if I linked them up with automatic payments to my back account (which I don't have).

I fully admit I sucked at paying this debt, and I take full responsibility, but when you tell them you can pay them 300 bucks a month, and have this payed off in 3 and 1/2 months, they want you to do more.

My only other option is to 'settle' for over 900 bucks, all at once, by the 31st.

She was telling me to talk to my 'room mates' and get them to let me use their account information.

We even broke down how much I make. I only work 4 days at the store, and Matt is the one who 'brings home the bacon'. What they want me to pay by the end of the month is almost more than I make in a month.

They want me to call back tomorrow morning at 9 am w/ the answer.

Matt told me that he isn't giving out his bank information to some collection agency, because he doesnt trust them. He is however, willing to help me out, by saying if I can come up with 600 bucks, he will pay the 350 or whatever. He told me to get a payment address to mail a check that will arrive there on the 31st. He said if they refuse it, then they obviously don't want my money, and that I am to record the call.

anyone ever had problems like this.

it's a collection agency that will lie their ass off and treat you like shit to get your money.

UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES give them access to any bank account.

If you make any agreements do nothing until you receive those agreements in writing.

    These people are scum.

That doesn't sound right to me Ron. I was under the impression that as long as you were paying each month, they couldn't take you to collections.

call them tomorrow and tell them you're going to do $300 a month. if they continue to not agree, start working your way up the management ladder. be firm but polite.
if they still don't agree, just tell them that the only other alternative is court.

if you are firm, they will accept the offer. remember, you have all the power here. they want their money.

this was one that I was't paying, so they have no history of payments with me. this one slipped by the radar, probably due to my freaking out and throwing out any bill collectors mail for a while.

    totally my fault.

but i am not sure of the legality of their actions, or their tacticts at getting me to pay.

The lawsuit is in all likelihood an empty threat. They can sue, but right now they're trying to scare the shit out of you to get you to pay.

If they get a bank account number they will wipe it clean.

Again - don't do any deals unless you get them in writing. And don't let them treat you like shit.

What I mean is, all you have to do is continue to send something and they should have to leave you alone. If you agree to a plan and for some reason have to miss it, then they have you by the balls.

I ran into this when I was 17 and got a card out of hand without a job. I started paying a flat $50 a month untill it was paid. I had received all sorts of calls up till then. No agreements or anything.

When they call, ask them for an address that you can send a check or money order to. Tell them when to expect it and get a number so that you can follow up and make sure they got it.

Once they get the first payment, they will be much more willing to work with you.

The threat of court is just that, a threat.

    Re: I hate bill collectors

Just pay the $300 a month, and ignore their threats. DO NOT give them bank information of any kind. It sounds like your cc company sold the debt to a third party who is being agressive about collecting on it. Definately send your payments registered mail and keep your records of what, when and how you sent it. Good luck.
