I'm confused about the crossover part. They said they tried to make them independant crossovers, but that led to awkwardness so now they're following their hearts.

technically you didn't have to read avengers to read the dissassembled tie ins, but it helped.
this time, you do have to read house of m to enjoy the tie ins. but you don't have to read all the tie ins to enjoy house of m. but if you do, its quite a well produced tapestry.

Hopefully this isn't just a cheap way to get rid of everything Brevoort and Quesada don't like (Spidey marriage, number of mutants etc) by retconning them out of existence. If it is my days as Marvel reader are over.
