    Artist Page-rate Query

    Dear artist friends,

What's a standard page rate to pay an illustrator for the use of pitching a comic? I would be looking for an artist who would ink and color their own stuff, perhaps even letter, presumably all digitally, so the rate should include those art chores as well. Any ideas you can give me would really help.

    Thanks!

Depends on the artist. I wouldn´t do the whole thing for less than $ 40, unless the project was really interesting. But that´s just me

My suggestion would be to have an idea before you contact any artist of how much you´re gonna pay. Then when you aproach them like this "$ xx for xx aomunt of pages" and then negotiate.

    Hope that helps.

well, you have to think that the average nowadays is a page a day, so i guess the right answer is to give them a day's pay for every page

Thanks, your help is much appreciated. This project would be 4 pages, and if an artist an I were to get the job, it would be a monthly gig in a national publication.

Well, different people bring home vastly different amounts of money for a day's work. Hence, my looking for some sort of standard page rate.

If I win the lottery I'll have lots of money, but until that happens I still have to worry about bills.

You're looking for someone to not only pencil and ink a page but also color and letter? I'd say that would start at probably around $50 a page. And that's for someone hungry.

It would behoove you to figure out how many total pages like this you need and then work out a flat fee for the entire project including coloring, lettering, etc.

It really all depends on who's out there that believes in your project enough to do all this work (which is a lot). You could very well find someone who might work for less. It all depends on what resources you use to find your artist.

Regardless, you're talking about a "work for hire" contract. Make sure you have that in place as well so neither of you get screwed in this deal.

Thanks, Dreamchild, that's very helpful. The thing is, I've had an editor from a national mag come to me, so while the pitch would be rather cheap, the artist would stand to make $500 a month or more, for 4 pages, once the ball is rolling. And since an editor of the magazine would be helping me / us with the pitch, it stands to reason that it'll work. I guess what I'm trying to communicate is, is that this isn't some pet project that I'd be taking to Image or something, but a project that already has advertisers backing it, and at least some editorial support.
