All we had for the first few episodes was Lisa Kudrow acting obnoxious and delusional. But something happened halfway through. Once Valerie Cherish really seemed to grasp that she was in a bad situation and barely hanging on, it suddenly became possible to identify and empathize with her. And with that, it became special.
The final episode? Almost tragic. When Valerie learns that her show has been picked up for another season, the look on her face is amazing. She goes through such a range of emotions in a second: from absolute horror to elation to some mixture where she knows she's getting what she wants but she can't figure out whether it's worth it anymore but it doesn't matter because it's out of her hands because they've got her by the balls so she'll just have to make it work. Lisa Kudrow's performance is heartbreaking at times.
It was a gutsy role for her to take, and it paid off, creatively at least.
