Honestly, whats up with the Green Day hate?

I'm seriously curious, and don't want this to be a whole big thing, but I've noticed lots of people hate on Green Day around here. What's the deal? People saying they are sellouts or corporate punk or not punk at all... it just flabbergasts me. Every track on their newest album is gold, and the writing is brilliant, pretty much everything punk is supposed to stand for. Is it because they're popular?

I just find it ironic that punk apparently has a status quo.

So what is your basis on that? I'm interested seriously. Why are they not "punk"? Do they claim all the time that they are? Interestingly, I don't think Ashlee or Avril have ever claimed to be punk. Others do it and they take the flak for it.
