So, basically, you're turning yourself into a liar, and covering for a thief, just so you won't have static with your girlfriend, who is away at school and isn't accessible to you anyway?
Fuck, I say, fuck that.
1) Good guys don't dip into the register till every shift.
2) You have an actual job that you are jeopardizing for this guy, and for what? If you're afraid your girlfriend will take sides with him because you were man enough to do your job, then you don't need her. You are putting your own livelihood at risk for this guy. How is it going to look if you get fired over this? Who would hire you then?
3) Also, you are screwing with other people's livelihoods by messing with their drawer totals.
4) If your girlfriend has you wrapped around her finger this tightly, then you need to cut her loose. If you fear his displeasure this much, then it can't be a very healthy relationship.
Do what you know is the right thing, because your decisions are enabling this guy to keep stealing from the job.
Well, my covering for him is actually unrelated to my girlfriend. I covered for him early on because of what happened to his father and because I've seen people make mistakes before, and, to be quite honest, we need the extra person. He works quite often, and our store is hard up for employees right now.
People can be $5 off on occasion, and I have helped them when it was in my capacity to do so, but I've never seen anyone off THAT often. I've also made sure that when I DID adjust the numbers, I never adjusted them to the point that anyone would get in trouble for it other than the person that was off. Besides, in the past, money has turned up in odd places and the deficit balanced itself out. This was simply my way of trying to help someone who may actually be off through no fault of their own. Since it became a regular problem, and since I'm no longer convinced that it's a "mistake", I've since stopped helping.
Thank you all for the advice. I really needed to vent.

Despite the circumstances he should be fired. Doesn't matter how long he's stayed there or if he's good at other things and you don't even need evidence on camera - the evidence has already been found by the constant shortage of cash everytime he works. Tolerating consistantly small shortages like this can lead to other things.Originally Posted by Marcdachamp
If you really, really need him to work for you there then maybe give him 7 days where if he doesn't start matching it up by that time then he's gone. But still, that may only make him a little smarter and he'll start getting trickier so he won't be caught the next time. I say this guy's gotta go.
I think it's pretty much assured that he's gone.Originally Posted by Brian Defferding

He was short again today. We checked the cameras. This time we caught him. Red handed. Our assistant manager (not letting on that she knew) confronted him about the fact that he's had money missing for weeks. He promptly flipped out. Started blaming other people, offered to make up what was missing (even though he claimed it wasn't true), started yelling about not being a cashier anymore. It was ugly. Seems round 2 is tomorrow when his Mom calls our head manager. He hasn't been fired yet, btw.
