N.Y. radio station fined $240,000 for 'smackfests'
NEW YORK - New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer and State Athletic Commission Chairman Ron Scott Stevens have slapped a $240,000 fine on New York urban radio station WQHT, owned by broadcaster Emmis Communications, for its "Smackfest" promotion featuring participants slapping each other in the face for a chance to win concert tickets and up to $5,000 in cash. In addition, the radio station will make a $60,000 payment to an anti-domestic violence non-profit and air anti-violence public service announcements.
