There are Avengers, and then there are Avengers

The original concept of The Avengers was to bring together already existing (and hopefully popular) heroes onto a team. It was a marketing thought that people would appreciate a "more superhero bang for your buck" sort of deal.

Over time, there have been Avengers who were new characters created just for the title too.

Good idea? Bad idea? Doesn't matter?

Overall, do the original-to-Avengers characters measure up to the hero-first-Avenger-later characters?

Have any of the characters created for the Avengers spun off into really good solo titles?

You could say the same thing about the JLA. Martian Manhunter, Superman, Aquaman... none of those characters have their own solo titles.

It's not a quiz question, it's an opinion question. Well, a little of both. I'm not a big enough comic nerd to know, for example, whether Hawkeye existed before he showed up in Avengers.

I picked up the 4 volumes of essential avengers, and they are a ball.

You missed the bit about "created for the Avengers."

If the Wonder Twins had a really great solo book, that might be a good example, only I know that's technically not JLA, but I don't do DC and the Superfriends are better friends to me than the friends I made at school.

Sorry! So Superman was created for the Justice Society. It's practically the same thing.

I've never cared for the Avengers, but I have never ever heard an Avengers fan say something nicer about an Avengers bit character than "[character's name] had potential, and [some writer, possibly the character's creator] seemed to be trying to do some interesting things with him, but [some other writer, possibly the character's creator] really screwd that up, and made him boring again."

Was The Vision around before AVENGERS? He wasn't, right, because Ultron made him? People like him, so he must be the exception.
