I agree Skyfall was way, way better. I didn't like Dark Knight Rises at all.
I don't know if the tone was all that close. DKR was a slog all the way through, Skyfall was fun, funny and exciting.
Saw Skyfall yesterday with the EverQueen.
Thinking about it, it seems to me this movie and DKR tell very similar stories. Except in my opinion Bond does it a hundred times better.
What do other folks think?

Oh yeah, the tone was different, but on reflection the stories are very similar. Each deals with an aging warrior confronted by an enemy attacking him on his home turf when he is less than his former amazing self, and in each story the hero "dies" and has to rediscover himself.
In both stories the enemy is someone with a grudge from the past.
Gotta say I think Dame Judy Dench was given a much better part to play than Michael Caine.

I really am looking forward to seeing Skyfall. Maybe tomorrow.
New blog The Momus Report - books, films and opinions.
Skyfall had Naomie Harris and Javier Bardem so it's an automatic win.
I think they both had script problems that were overcome by great directing and performances.
DKR felt like a 2nd or 3rd draft and could have used a couple more passes to work out what were a bunch of minor problems. I liked the ideas very much though and like to compare it to Prometheus. Leaving the theater after seeing both of them, I like DKR the more I think about it and Prometheus less.
Bond was overly nostalgic and the final act was a bit of a let down. A great Bond movie but it had flaws that could have been corrected.
