I believe Frenzy was not well-received, and that's about the time Hitchcock called it quits. Personally, I think it's a good film, and agree that it's an overlooked film. My mom (in her 70s) saw it for the first time a couple years ago, and called me up to rave about this great Hitchcock film she had never seen before. Who knew mom was so...'edgy'.
das
Rear Window is my favorite Hitchcock. Not many films have ambient musical soundtracks that stick in the cranial music server like that film. All-around brilliance.
I'll still defend Citizen Kane as the best film ever made. But I will admit my position is likely driven as much by the history of the making of that film, as it is by Welles' technical and artistic brilliance.
"And remember, if you're out on your bike tonight, people, do wear white."
Not sure what you mean by "called it quits" but Hitchcock was 72 years old when he made that film. He made Family Plot after that which is not on par with most of his work but this a fairly good quirky film.
Remember when you talk about Frenzy remember that this was an X rated film in England back in the time when the X rating was not actually used for something other than porn.
Checked out Vertigo on my Flickchart which I spent a considerable amount of time with a couple years back but have not kept particularly up to date.
Vertigo is rated #43 all-time by the Flickchart community and third amongst Hitchcock films behind Rear Window and North by Northwest.
I had ranked it 156 out of 1691 total movies ranked. It is ranked 4th in Hitchcock films be me behind North by Northwest, Psycho and Rear Window. But, looking at the Hitchcock films on my list it is obvious a lot of them are way too low. I worked at getting the top portion of the list to be fairly reflective of my opinion. But it is way too time consuming to try to come close to managing that many films.
