... took an unexpected leap when private members bill was drawn this week proposing the law be amended to allow same-sex people the right to marry. The right wing coalition government hasn't exactly been opposed to the idea (or so it has claimed) but has simply claimed it had beter things to do, so this is nice. Better yet, while some politicians are opposed the Prime Minister John Key, who voted against the civil unions bill a few years ago, has indicated he will support the bill (it is a conscience vote, so the whips have no power). The law is broadly supported and looks reasonably likely to pass. So yay my adopted home!

Well according to the "slippery slope" argument wheeled out by some Republicans, it'll only be about six months before you can marry a duck.Originally Posted by saintsaucey

Ah, yes. The good old False Precedent Fallacy. I think it was in 6th grade that I learned it was nonsense, which is why we can understand Republicans not knowing about it.
"If we allow gays to marry, next thing you know we'll have to let people marry farm animals!" is the exact logical equivalent of "If we allow men and women to marry, next thing you know we'll have to let people marry farm animals."
