    J. Michael Straczynski should join the The Newsroom's writing staff. The strawman resulting from *that* union would tear a hole in space-time.

I officially want a shirt with Sam Watterson's character. He is the greatest thing about this show. I was sold on the show with one line: I'm A Marine Don. I will beat the shit outta you! I don't care how many protien bars you eat!

Just watched the third episode, and what really stinks is while I pretty much agree with Sorkin's politics, I just feel like I'm being beaten over the head with it. And placing it two years in the past is kind of a cheat, like having the Legion of Super-Heroes come back in their time bubble to warn President Kennedy. To have one of their reporters warn about the debt-ceiling problem on election night in 2010 just seems a little too Casssandra for me. And the dialogue is pretty good, but I just don't believe the characters as people: they are either Saintly or Evil and all of the women seemed to be portrayed as competent in their jobs, but emotional wrecks who can't handle relationships. Is that a Sorkin thing?

I liked this weeks episode. Fonda was great in her small role. Pill was good but not as great as last week.

Tonight was the gun control episode and the newsroom's stroy just so happened to come out right around the time of the congress woman being shot in Arizona. Of course the newsroom was against gun control or atleast against rush and sarah lying about obama wanting to take our guns. And of course they refused to report the congress woman as dead when everyone else was and low and behold she survived.

I get now why everyone was saying it's cheating to use real stories and pretend your staff is omniscient

In relationship news. Don fixes Jim up with Maggie's room mate who sleeps with Jim because Maggie says its okay even though we all know its not and Jim lies about it.

I'm gonna say right now that the girl who was watching Jim and Maggie's discussion a little too intently is the spy.

I want to love this show because I'm a journalist and considered a liberal, but as I said, I just can't believe in any of the people as characters, they're all there to spout a point of view or represent an 'issue.' And I agree that it's a cheat to set it in the past when you know what happened, unless you do it in a comedy. And is Kathryn Hahn in every show now?

The pilot was good but not great, as there was too much speechifying. The next two episodes went from bad to awful/unwatchable. This last episode, however, finally showed some life.

    The good:
The water tossing joke by the staff. That did make me LOL.
The conspiracy plot, bringing finally some plot structure to the season.
Sam Waterston and Jane Fonda who got to act rather than spout Sorkin's dialogue.
That could be said for most of the episode. it was rather less of speeches and more of letting the actors do some of the work. And it was better.
The newsroom doing some real breaking news. It was somewhat exaggerated but the split second decision of whether to call Giffords dead or not was more of the side of realism than the show has ever been. (Might have been interesting to see them get it wrong but...that would mess up the Fonda conspiracy plot.
Will's date from hell with the woman carrying the gun. That was funny too.

    The bad:
Alisson Pill has a great, expressive face but why she's using that skill in the service of this awful love triangle plot only Sorkin knows.
A slightly better handle on Dev Patel's character was good but reducing him to the Bigfoot guy wasn't so great.
Anything related to Will/producer's past. I don't care.
Will's date from hell was funny but way over the top.

The last episode seemed much better directed and Sorkin toned it down from 11 to let his excellent cast do some work. He's about 70 percent there, I'd say, and I'll keep watching in hope that he gets closer. 90 percent good Sorkin would be excellent.
