Quite frankly... sexist or not, I don't really want to hear the word bitch and threats of rape tossed around in a Batman video game.

As I said, there were very few occasions where I found stuff that was facepalm-worthy sexist. Very few, but not none. I wasn't on the Mortal Kombat team, but I took one look at the default costumes for several of the women in that game when and just shook my head.

Look, I enjoy looking at sexy women as much as the next straight guy, but there's a difference between skimpy costumes being unlockables and sticking your female characters in the most degradingly stripperific outfits you can find right off the bat. These look ridiculous.

As for the second half, when I say "the female testers never had any problems", I meant that I never received word of them complaining or expressing disdain about the games they were testing. The vintage porn magazines in Mafia II were optional collectables and a very small part of the overall gaming experience. Male and female testers had to both verify that the magazines could all be located and obtained as well as make sure that the images displayed properly. Lest you think this was pointless, this actually gave rise to a significant issue because the images were taken from the Playboy archives and the girls were being collectively billed as "Playmates", but it turns out that one of them had only posed for a spread but never actually been an official Playmate. We ended up having to write a bug report and change the text.

Duke Nukem Forever, however, was another matter entirely. A large portion of the game was dripping with machismo, sexual objectification, sexism, and quite a bit of misogynistic humor, so the female testers were being constantly bombarded with enough of this crap that some of them expressed some discomfort or annoyance testing it.

Ok I'm going to try to do this without getting sidetracked....

Playboy has had a very interesting history with feminism. Yes they've shown nude women, but they've also been a port of call for liberalism since the magazines inception. In fact many who have posed for playboy or are posing consider themselves feminists. While yes playboy shows boobies, it has rejected certain social norms about what a woman can and cannot do. It's also famous for NOT doing certain things, there are certain pictures and practices that Hefner has been dead set on Playboy not taking. For example when nude pictures of Vanessa Willaims surfaced that could ruin her career as Miss America (and ultimately did) Playboy turned them down because those pictures where not released with Willaims permission. They were then sold to Penthouse, who of coursed published them because Penthouse is notorious for not giving a fuck.

Yes Playboy produces smut, but it's a different kind of smut then you'll see in the hardcore porn, which lets face it has a reputation for victimization. You don't have to look very far to find that the porn industry is rife with imagery of men dominating women, and no, it's not just Japanese Porn that does this, there's a great deal of it that comes from right hear in the states. Nor do you have to look hard to hear horror stories of what that industry does to women. In contrast most of the woman who pose or have posed for playboy go on to leave generally normal or healthy lives.

On the other hand Playboy has been criticized for perpetuating the same images of physical beauty that can be seen in Cosmo, the only difference being the women run around in a lot less in Playboy. They're have been exceptions like when WWF's Chyna and Raye Holliet (aka American Gladiator Zap) posed nude for the magazine. But they have been few and fair between.

In any case there stuff is generally tame compared to all the other stuff you can find out there now, you can find similar stuff on most art sites these days. Now if you will excuse I sudden have this urge to....browse some pictures.....

Glad I haven't played this game yet. May never try it now.

Really insightful series in general and they are pretty damn fair when it comes to critique of the industry. Hell the only time they truly went all out in destroying something is when EA released "Call of Juarez: The Cartel".
Yup. I don't necessarily agree with them 100%, they do well reasoned and informed commentaries and are very insightful.

Minor correction, CoJ: The Cartel is published by Ubisoft not EA. Although Ubisoft is more and more like EA's french cousin.

I wouldn't say it was every character, I can only recall Two Face calling her that, but yeah it's there. The rape thing is more insinuation then outright saying it, they had to keep a teen rating after all. I can recall their being only two lines, "We just want to be friends kitty, real good friends." and "here kitty kitty" the second one could be considered more of a taunt. The problem is they're both mook lines, so you'll hear them quite a bit. I can see where it could make a female gamer uncomfortable.

My mistake. I'm generally cool with Ubisoft myself so that might have had something to do with it lol. In fact there's a real possibility of me working for Ubisoft one day. That is depending on how I play my cards when I graduate. I'm studying 3d Animation in general, not directly dealing with game engines. But since many of my classmates are in the Gaming program I'm getting kind of familiar with UDK at the least.

Also liked how in their Cartel episode they never really referenced the first two COJ games. They only had a beef with Cartel, whether they loved or hated the first two games did not come into the equation. Gotta respect that.

Cracked takes a crack at this with 14 worst boobs in the history of video games

    http://www.cracked.com/blog/the-14-w...y-video-games/

Personally I would have made number 12,13 every female ever designed by of Tomonobu Itagaki, not just Kasumi, and would have placed them much higher on the list just on the jiggle physics alone which would cause them boobs to bounce like jello molds at the slightest movement. I actually like Ivy and her boobs, but I can understand why she is on the list, especially after that horrid Soul Calibur V add.
