Thread: Flat on my back

  1. #61
So I'm getting really, really bored of the limited mobility I have right now, and I'm running out of anime to watch. Can anyone recommend me something to try? I mostly seem to be into the quirky schoolgirl slice of life type shows like Azumanga Daioh right now. And I don't mind at all if there's a dash of Yuri in there, like Yumi Yuri, which I just finished, and loved all to bits.

Have you watched Bamboo Blade or Haganai? Both are available at Funimation's site. Bamboo Blade is about a mostly female kendo club. There are a couple guys, but it's not a harem and romance is largely irrelevant. Haganai is sorta like Haruhi, but it's heavy on the fanservice and IMO, it's funnier. It's sort of a harem, but the premise is that it's a club for a bunch of kids that don't have friends so they're trying to learn how to make friends.

I have a massive anime collection and the only thing I have close to what Karen asking for is Black Lagoon which says a lot about me and little of it good.

I figure that it's worse (at least since I'm a guy and past college age) to have some suggestions.

Aria the Animation is nice (Although I actually still haven't finished it, so maybe my endorsement should be tabled), it's nice and quiet and simple....and in the future! It's very easy to get lost in since it's slow and calm and easy-going. Conflict is extremely limited since it's just about people being people, there's no hidden war or anything going on (Plus, did I mention it's in the future?)

Hitohira was also good, but it's been so long since I saw it that I actually don't even remember what I liked about it, just that I liked it, so for all I can recall it might actually be bad and I just didn't realize it at the time.

Saki is EXTREME MAHJONG!!!!!!! (You've never seen mahjong played until you've seen the speed lines and lightning get involved).
Life is like a roller coaster. It has its ups and downs, but if you sit back and relax you get a heck of a ride.

Watched the first episode of Saki on Crunchyroll. I do like the way anime does EXTREME board/card games, but I'm not really hooked on this yet. It's comparable to Chihayafuru, but in Chihayafuru the game is a lot easier to understand for non-players and the characterisation more subtle. I'll give it a couple more episodes.

That is actually one criticism I had of the show; I have a limited understanding of mahjong and could barely follow any of the gameplay. I had to go off context and character reactions (When somebody yells "I won!" I kinda figure they won). I still enjoyed it, but I feel like I would have liked it better if I could follow what was going on. For example in The Legend of Korra they never actually read the Pro-Bending rule book to the audience, but by having people explain the rules to new characters and working in natural discussions of the game I was able to follow the contests very well. And that's not even a real sport! (Although it totally should be)

Yeah, the game in Chihayafuru was a complete mystery to me but it's explained to you in such a way that doesn't feel like an infodump, and yet at no point do you feel like you are missing something. It doesn't hurt that the game is essentially quite simple, and the story opens with a newbie being taught it. Everyone in Saki can already play to a high standard, and it's a complex game, which they seem to assume you already know. There's also not much conflict outside of the game so far, so if you're not really following the game there's not much there for you. Think I'll randomly try a few other things on Crunchyroll, since that's the only anime streaming site that works very well on my iPad.

Sorry Karen, about the only thing I ever got into that was close to be quirky schoolgirl was Dirty Pair. I'm more of a fan of the spacey stuff like Outlaw Star and Cowboy Bebop, both of which I'm sure you've heard of already.
