Rookie Blue: A cop show with more women than men (And they wear uniforms, too)

I was watching Reaper last night and looking up the filmography of Missy Peregrym (I love Missy) and discovered that after Reaper got the axe (But what happens to their souls?) she got the lead role (Well 'lead' might be a misnomer, since it's an ensemble piece, but she's certainly the primary character) in Rookie Blue, a cop show about rookie cops (duh). It seemed intriguing so I looked it up, and I was a bit gobsmacked to discover that, out of five main characters, three are women, and one of them is black. More than that, as officers (Not detectives or CSI or anything) they wear normal police uniforms, nothing tight, low-cut or exposing while on-duty. The first two and a half episodes (Hey, I just found it last night, I can't watch the whole show in a single evening) also didn't have any of them undercover as prostitutes (Although I think I did hear that it happens later).

Not only is the primary cast predominantly female, but some of the training officers (There's about half a dozen other 'main' characters that are older, experienced officers assigned as mentors and teachers to the cast) are also women.

Where did this come from? How did this happen? How have we not talked about this on this forum?

Taken as a whole, the show is...well, it's okay. Not the greatest show I've ever seen, but watchable and (Since it has made it to three seasons) it probably gets better once I get past the first three episodes. But, even if it's not OMFG AMAZING SHOW AWESOME!!!, it's good because it's just a cop show. It's like every other cop show out there: They arrest bad guys and investigate crimes and occasionally blow an investigation because they're new and then get partnered up with the guy who they accidentally messed up (because it's whacky to have people who initially dislike each other as partners). The women don't spend their time gabbing about shoes, they spend it being @#$%ing terrified because it's their first day and they're hearing gunshots, and like every other new cop they're trying to switch from the Academy to real life. It's not pandering, it doesn't have a gimmick (It's not "Lady Cops: Looking fine while fighting crime"), it's just a regular cop show where the cast has more women than men.

Has anybody else seen this show?

I think you've answered your own question as to why this hasn't been talked about: It's just another cop show. And it's being treated that way. The problem is "Lady Cops: Looking fine while fighting crime" very explicitely states that the show is about women. But if the predominance of female leads isn't advertised, then it wouldn't be that noticeable.

Perhaps you should see it as a good sign: it's nothing so outrageously rare and new anymore that people would be aflutter over it :3

My mom loves this show. LOVES IT. Like, "watches every episode and then goes online to read fan-fiction" loves it.

I'm thrilled by her enthusiasm, though I've never seen a frame of it. The world needs more rabid fans. Of Everything.

Southland is the only cop show really worth watching.

I've watched the show a few times and have never seen anything remotely resembling police work being done. It's like the Grey's Anatomy of cop shows.

They made that exact same analogy on TvTropes.org.

Like I said, Southland really is the only cop show worth watching. Its been praised by actual cops to being as close to the real deal as possible, the research the shit out of everything when it comes to that show, including the proper way to do a pat down, (with your sidearm facing away from the suspect.)

The Rookie strikes me as yet another show with "sexy female cops" and trust me, there's been a few of those over the years.

Dammit, why aren't more people watching Southland? It's one of the best shows on tv! It's got story arcs that aren't predictable, great characters, and a painstaking attention to detail. Yet people keep passing this over for shit like NCIS and the new Hawaii 5-0. Why! Why! Why! Why! Why!

I watched the first season of Rookie Blue, then lost interest. It was pretty so-so.
