Actually, the UK doesn't fully use metric either.Originally Posted by K-DoG7p7
People still tend to talk about their height and weight in Imperial measurements. I would tend to say that I'm 5'8" and 16 stone in weight (stones are 14lbs each) which is 224lbs rather than 170cm and 103kg or whatever. Miles are also favoured over km too. Almost everything else is metric though.

Up until 1971 our money was pretty strange. We had pounds (£), shillings (-/) and pence (d) and there were twelve pence in a shilling and twenty shillings in a pound. It confused the hell out of everyone who didn't come from a Commonwealth country that had used the system.

The UK did terribly at the Eurovision Song Contest (second last with Engelbert Humperdink singing) but he would have beat that American singer by a mile.Originally Posted by K-DoG7p7

Have any of you guys heard of Hurling? Ken Bruen describes it as a cross between Hockey and Murder so I'm very interested all of a sudden.
I've watched a bit of hurling over the years. It is massive in Ireland along with gaelic football and Scotland play Ireland every year at a mixed shinty / hurling match or series while the Austraians play Ireland in a series at Australian football / gaelic football..Originally Posted by Lester C.
Hurling is less like field hockey than shinty and is a little more like lacrosse at times as the ball is held up on the hurley although there are also features of hockey and shinty present.
Shinty and hurling are closely related as shinty is apparently descended from an early form of hurling, which took off in a different direction from the Irish game.
