Thread: Comics For The Week Of 5/23/12

Comics For The Week Of 5/23/12

Batman Inc. #1 is a real fun return to form from Morrison. They also resolved some of the cliffhangers from Leviathan Strikes, but obviously those got spoiled anyway.

Flash #9 was also really good and JL Dark #9 was the first time this series has clicked for me!

Haven't read a lot yet, but I really liked Batman Inc, and Flash was terrific. Also I enjoyed the Nighthawk & Cinnamon finale in All-Star Western, but I haven't read the Jonah Hex story yet.

But the comic I'm most looking forward to this week is Resident Alien #1 from Dark Horse, by Steve Parkhouse and Peter Hogan. The three installments from Dark Horse Presents (collected in issue 0) were among my favorite stories that book has published so far, and I've been waiting eagerly for this issue for 4 or 5 months, it seems. It's about an alien living incognito in a small northwestern town who winds up becoming the town's doctor when the old one is murdered -- it's almost like Northern Exposure with a sci-fi twist. Give it a look -- I don't think you'll regret it!

Batman Incorporated Volume 2 #1: Yes, finally! SOOOOO happy that it finally came out. Did not disappoint either. Good to finally be reading a Batman book again.

Batman Inc was good. Clever start, fairly clever end. Nice art, snappy dialogue. My only complaint would be of all the Outsider he could have picked... Freight Train? I doubt even gail could salvage that train wreck. Also, aren't we all glad now that Snyder couldn't use Cassandra in Batman 1? She had such an important role in this book.

"Batman, Inc." was insane. The art was stunning and creative and had a lot of momentum. The writing was beautiful, at times funny, at times creepy, and always compelling. This book also had what is possibly one of my top five panels in the history of comics. If you've read it, you know the one.

"I, Vampire" was good as always. It's a bit more of a set-up issue, but woh! does it deliver on setting things up. Next month should be interesting!

So far, that's all I've gotten to. I read "Leviathan Strikes" again before reading "Inc." and wow, I loved it all over again.

I might be out of the loop but when did Snyder ever say Cass would be showing up in issue #1? The only Batman Inc. members who showed up period were the ones from the Leviathan one-shot. Mr. Unknown, Knight and Squire, Man of Bats and Nightrunner were nowhere to be seen here. Even the other Batfam members like Barbara weren't around.

You know, that makes sense, and no, Scott never said she'd be in issue one. But fuck being charitable. Ever since this sodding reboot every time someone asks where Cass is the answer was Inc. Like an ensamble book where no one except Bruce himself gets a large amount of time was going to compensate for years of absence when all the boys get their own books. But it was clearly all we were going to get. Then they make out like it's important that she not appear anywhere else, even though other writers wanted her, and the reason was Inc. Because she was going to be in Inc and apparently that meant she couldn't be anywhere else, like how Batwing hasn't been able to be in his own book or in JLI, or how Robin hasn't been able to be in Batman or Batman and Robin, or like how Bruce hasn't been able to be in "deep breath* Batman, The Dark Knight, Detective Comics, JL, JLI, Batwing, Catwoman, and God knows how many other books. Because he's going to be in Inc. And now here Inc is and nothing.
So, yeah. Sorry, but I'm just sick of this bullshit.

I doubt very much we'll see much of Cass. We won't see Wally or Donna or Steph either, I suspect. It's the way of the new DCU.

I've been thinking I need to find David's YJ trades. Are there any, guys?

*Sorry, don't have my comics this week. I did interview Kelly Sue DeConnick about the new Captain Marvel series, though, and it looks AWESOME.

He said he couldn't use her since she's appearing in Batman Inc, nothing about from the first issue. I mean isn't this issue picking up directly from Leviathan Strikes?
