If it's not Ricardo Montalbán, it's not Kahn, end of story.

Why does it have to be Khan at all? I thought the point of rebooting the timeline was they have the freedom to go anywhere they want, storywise. Also I can think of a few villains from the original series that were more interesting than Khan. I liked the episode and the movie, but honestly I never found Khan all that fascinating (captain) as a character.

I agree 100% that Star Trek is a gold mine for new storylines but alas, I'm thinking that there going the same way as every freaking Superman movie now having to do with either Luthor or Zod.

To be fair, and I'm by no means a classic Trek fan (I'm the asshole the reboot appealed to), I think you're stuck because Kahn is so iconic. There's no way to do it in a way that will please everyone, but there's also just no way to not do it.

True, but how did Khan even become iconic in the first place? The makers of Star Trek 2 tried something new and plucked him out of total obscurity. They could've just gone with the Klingons again, because that's what people expected, but they took a chance. I think the makers of this Star Trek 2 should follow the same example. Screw fan service. Surprise us.

The plot I have heard (total rumor) was that he is actually a starfleet officer in this, incharge of a black ops type strike team.

I agree, but I also understand the realities of wanting a sure thing.

Although one could argue that just sticking the name "Star Trek" on it probably guarantees a handsome box office. Still, Hollywood knows there's a lot competing for our attention, and "hey, I've heard of that" seems to be the thing they're latching onto right now.

Khan Noonian Singh's origin, complete with the Eugenics Wars, is one of the things that should have remained more-or-less the same since it happened before the timeline changed. He would have been meeting a rather different Kirk, Spock and McCoy though. On the other hand, Cumberbach's Khan could be some modern descendant ...

I know, how many times can you retell Moby Dick? Oh wait, I forgot about First Contact....forget I asked.
