I don't think his weighing in would have swayed the vote much in NC, let alone 500,000 votes.

Speaking for myself, I'm annoyed, but its not as much at the president himself as the situation. I understand the political realities of him saying something like this.....and I'm also of the opinion that supporting gay marriage should be basic human decency, not a political victory, a major commitment, or something I should feel grateful to Obama for.

So yeah, I'll cop to being a Gloomy Bear or whatever the hell you want to call it. Woohoo, our president is on board with my basic civil rights. And also has no problem using that fact as political capital with the left. Or feel any need to address the REAL problem in all this, ie - the rights of a minority should not be a matter of popular vote.

Hell, I'll even admit to being childishly peeved that something that's all about our civil rights has been turned into 'omg Obama's so progressive, yay, everything's better!'.

Cuz, you know, its not. What happened yesterday still sucks. Nothing's actually changed today. And someone saying 'I support gay marriage'....but only now that I've carefully weighed my options and feel that its safe enough to stick my head out there now....yeah, no. My hero. Swoon.

    You are ALL Gloomy Bear!

Sure, it should be a basic human right. But it's not. And while powerful people are working hard to take MORE rights away from us, and calling it Religious Freedom, the Man In Charge, the Big Cahuna, the President of the U.S. of A. Is standing up and saying "No. That's bullshit."

It might not be a big deal to you, but I bet there are a whole lot of gay kids around the country who are feeling just a little bit more validated today. Hell, it makes me feel better and I don't even live there. But it gives me hope that maybe the wretches who run my country might just take note and become a little more sympathetic to the notion of giving me equal rights.

    To me, it's pretty simple:

The President of the United States of America took a position on gay marriage that no president in the history of the republic had ever taken.

Exactly! 8 years ago Bush pushed ant gay marriage/gay rights as a big reason for re electing him - and he won! Even 4 years ago coming out pro could be political suicide.

Now people accuse Obama of pandering or trying to make a calculated political move to get re elected. The fact that it's the exact opposite of what was considered smart for re election really shows how far we've come as a nation, and shows a sliver if hope after the awful situation in NC.

Shit, at least we have a President who is "Thinking" and "Calculating" after eight years of a moron.

Bush's Vice President -- Dick Cheny -- who even has an adult gay child -- wouldn't come out as pro-marriage equality until AFTER he had safely left office.

And, as I pointe dout before -- this is going to the Supreme Court. There isn't much Obama can do about that part of it but depending on when it gets to the court he might have had the chance to appoint at least one new Justice and one Justice might be enough to put the decision over the top.

Re: Obama comes out as Pro Gay Marriage.

Let's put some things in perspective here:

35 years ago interracial marriage become legal in the entire US. When Obama was born, his parents faced the same types of difficulties in some states recognizing their marriage as gay couples do today. He was 6 before his parents' marriage would have been considered legal in all 50 states (they had divorced by then). So I would think he has a somewhat decent idea of what people going through today in trying to either get married or have their marriage recognized. And it did take the Supreme Court to hand down that decision.

The thing is, the same arguments used then to try to prevent interracial marriage are being used today to prevent gay marriage. Though some of the whackjobs are also tossing in pedophilia and beastiality because they're fucking morons and because... why not? Hey go all in, right?

Oh, it's also time to just call it MARRIAGE. No need for a qualifier in front of it. Marriage between two people, two legal consenting adults who love one another.

Some asshole in a comment on a YouTube video also threw in the "Well if we let gays marry then why not let fathers marry their daughters!"
