The problem is, it often requires more pattern recognition than a normal human can reasonably be expected to have. If I can't readily figure out what the letters are, I usually just lose interest. I have to really, really want to get into a site to bother with refreshing it and going blind trying to figure out what it says.
I actually prefer the ones that ask you to solve a simple math problem.
"Fascism should rightly be called Corporatism, as it is the merger of corporate and government power." --Benito Mussolini
"I hope we shall crush in its birth the aristocracy of our moneyed corporations, which dare already to challenge our government to a trial of strength and to bid defiance to the laws of our country." --Thomas Jefferson

I have trouble with a lot of them too. And I'm good at pattern recognition overall, in other things. The problem (for me at least) is that they tend to blend certain letters together with each other in such a way that they potentially look like OTHER letters.
I propose an experiment. Next time someone here encounters a Captcha they loathe/are having trouble with, do a screen capture, pop it into your favorite graphic editor and trim it down a little, and paste it here. Others can comment on whether its an individual difficulty, or just a shitty Captcha.
I think those captchas are actually lenient. You don't have to strain to see whether a circle is an O or a zero, both will work. Similarly with l and capital i.
I'm sorry I'm sorry I'm sorry I wanted to avoid the memetic refference but I don't think I can resi͎̳ͣͦ̒̅s̿ͦ́t̡̪̪̿̀ͯ ̸ͬͣͤ̐̍ͭH͓̙̽̓͋ͪ̒ͥͫE͒ͣ͒̋͌̊ ̝̞Ĉ̺̜̺̹͙͓̈́̔̂ͥŌ̩̞̪̙̃̌̎͆̈́ ͪM̭͚̙̯̓̚͠ȨS̳̞̤͎.̳͕̥͕̲͓̟̉ͧ̔ ̉̽
EDIT: Oh wait, those two memes aren't the same thing. I have brought great shame upon my people. This year's nut harvest shall be a poor one indeed.

I normally have no trouble with them. Most Captcha's I've dealt with have been busy and maybe oddly colored, but not illegible. But there have been a couple that I've screenshotted and e-mailed to the site admin with a request to fix their damn system. Seriously, how is anyone supposed to read these?

Here's one of the best I've ever had.
"There seems to be something in the human condition that makes people dislike people that they think are different. If we could get rid of that, it'd be a better world" - Stan Lee
Don't some of these have an option for people who can't read them or have poor eyesight? I'm pretty sure I've seen that button before, but I never clicked it so I don't know what alternative it offers.
