I have 20/10 vision. I shouldn't have trouble seeing things. But I swear, those verification words are in-comprehensible to me. I look and look and look, and I cannot figure them out.
Is it just me, or do other people have the same problem?

I occasionally have similar problems; the problem isn't eye-sight exactly, but shape recognition and color differentiation.
My recommendation, apart from frequent refreshes, is to do these recognition-missions in the morning, where your recognition skils are usually at their best.

I hate those Captcha things. They make them intentionally impossible to decode even though it's completely beside the point... the whole point is to make sure a real human being is there to transcribe words from an image file into a text field. It doesn't matter to a bot whether the text is hard to read or not.
I think they are mostly used nowadays as a test to weed out the people who aren't committed enough to registering to put up with the annoyance.

I had one guy try to explain to me that captchas not only force a live human to type in the characters but they're also designed to defeat high-end bots using OCR technology on the image, hence the weird color/shape thing.
