Already a thread here somewhere. But yeah, I saw the first two episodes online. Pretty darn awesome.

    Re: Legend of Korra

This show along with Young Justice have actually gotten me up on Saturday mornings for the first time in a while. Well worth it. I also love how this show is basically a giant middle finger to people who don't think a female lead who's also a woman of color can lead a show.

I have been amused by some of the people my age (read: early 20s) that I've seen complaining about the "juvenile" elements in it. No shit Sherlock, it's a kid's cartoon. As much as the creators acknowledge the older fans (which is pretty unusual) it's called "not being the target audience." They're not quite as bad as some of the Bronies, but it's still eye-rolling.

BUT YOU CAN'T HAVE HUMOR IN A CARTOON YOU JUST CAN'T.

It looked even better on TV than it did on my laptop and it just looked beautiful. Such high hopes!

Honestly Korra has just the right mix. Earlier episodes of The Last Airbender kind of took a while to get the balance of humour right but by this point the creators have got it down to an art. I will say that having the Airbender kids being prominent could have been a mistake but so far they've just been awesome.

Balance is key and LOK maintains it perfectly.

That actually fits in pretty well with the show's theme too. Balancing the elements and all that.

And I was just thinking about the (many) reasons the movie was an epic failure, and one of them was that they erased the humor in the original series and made it GRIMDARK throughout. It's pretty clear that this show is going to go in pretty dark directions, but they seem to know better than to overdo it.

Also I'm enjoying that they had Korra call out Tenzin on the whole "airbending is about freedom" thing while simultaneously keeping her locked up. And I know a lot of kids and parents can relate to that.

I think the only good thing about the film was the Zuko/Iroh scenes. But yeah, the show could certainly get dark and the character were no strangers to angst but the film really pushed it too far. I mean, why did the film even have Momo if they were not going to use him to lighten the mood with Background Shenanigans?

Yeah, they seemed to miss the point that if you're going to have a comic relief character, they actually have to perform some sort of comedy. Otherwise they might as well just be a prop (which Momo essentially was in that movie). I think it's also important that "comedy" doesn't have to be "hit someone in pie with face", and a lot of the comedy in Avatar was actually character-based, as in someone's own flaws landing them in funny situations. Tenzin's face literally going red was one such moment, and it helped crack the inscrutable master facade and show that he's not perfect either. That's actually my favorite type, and I think people of any age can enjoy that.

Honestly it's pretty easy to forget that he even was in the movie. Seriously he does nothing, if you blinked a few times when he was introduced you could totally be unaware of his appearance. But then again Momo originally was not even going to be in the film until a focus group test made them put Momo in as almost an afterthought.

Huh, I didn't know that. Certainly explains a lot, since I'm pretty sure he was put in a couple scenes in post, and if he wasn't planned at first that would explain it.
