Re: I saw "Cabin in the Woods." (spoilers)

I actually heard good things about 3Stooges.

I have no interest in it (the trailers looked awful), but I keep hearing it's funny.

how close were 2 & 3? Did Cabin come in far behind Stooges? Or was it close?

I did see that Cabin built on Fri-Sat numbers. . so that's a good sign, as horror films usually drop after opening bigger.

Stooges was #2 and beat Cabin by $2 million, though it was also playing on about 700 more screens. Hunger Games still tops.

Been hearing good things about Stooges, though? Again, I guess there's no accounting for taste. Stooges looks like absolute garbage.

    EDIT:
I'm sort of fearing that Cabin will have a Scott Pilgrim-style box office. This bodes ill, especially after being shelved for a couple years, but it's got cult classic written all over it anyways.

It'll make back its budget and some marketing costs, probably. Don't know if it will turn a profit until DVD and video sales.

    on box office:

problem is that it's neither fish, nor fowl, nor good red meat. the ad campaign did a good-ish job of hiding the "twist," but not that there was one. a lot of the appreciation for the film is going to come from people who have a specific intellectual appreciation of horror films - and most horror fans don't have it. so you're going to have bad reviews, because the reviewers aren't getting what they expected (which always pisses them off). and that drives down ticket sales.

hopefully, the people that did see and like it will boost it through word-of-mouth.

it really makes me think of Fight Club, in that the studio had no idea what to do with it and critics hated/loved it - but it's now considered a classic.

The box office would concern me more if I wanted sequel but this should be a one in done and I'm fine with that because it was good and any follow up is bound to be awful. I did read that it had abetted showing sat than fri. Which is believed to be because of word of mouth so maybe word of mouth willcontinue and carry this movie.

    Spoilers:
How did they not know the fool didn't die? ALl the surveillance cameras they have, they don't have one in the maintenance bay? That seems really...convenient.

    Spoilers:
i really think it was commentary on how jaded, complacent and evil these folks were. they've institutionalized this horrible thing so long, they've corrupted themselves with an induced expectation of success. plus, the fool always dies in horror movies.

    another, unrelated thought:

    Spoilers:
    loved the Scooby-Doo vibe.

One thing I loved was how this took Joss back to the central ideas that inspired Buffy (while playing very squarely with ideas found in Angel, Firefly, and Dollhouse) and led him to a new conclusion.
