    Comic Book Printing

    Good morning.

Now that the formalities are out of the way...

Can anyone suggest a comic book printing company other than ka-blam, comic book printing, etc. for graphic novels? Meaning a printer that prints in the 1k and up range in terms of copies? The internet is filled with printers but I wanted to see what others on the bendis board have used and their success or complaints with them have been. Any help is appreciated!

*edited to specify graphic novels and not floppies*

I recently got a quote for a trade I needed printed. I got quotes from Transcontinental, Lebonfon and GlobalPSD. Transcontinental gave me the best price, so I went with them. For the most part, our transaction was pretty smooth. There was a mix up on the dimensions of the book. I specified 9x6, but they gave me a quote for 6x9. I haven't received my books yet... I think my books are due to be finished sometime today.

I was going to send out for a quote from globalPSD, will try the other two.

Did they get the size right in printing though?

I've used them a couple of times for various types of books and they've done a great job.

My books are scheduled to arrive on Thursday, so I'll find out then. I assume so though. I caught the error when they gave me the template for the cover.

GlobalPSD had the highest prices of the three printers I got a quote from. But they also quoted a higher quality paper stock than the other two, which may have accounted for the price difference.

My books ended up being delivered on Friday instead of Thursday. They were shipped using a freight company and I needed to be available to receive them. I missed their initial call on Wednesday and by the time I called them back, their scheduling person had left for the day. But I called them on Thursday morning and scheduled a Friday delivery.

The books themselves look pretty good. The printing was relatively painless, though there were some hiccups along the way. They quoted the wrong size initially which kind of cascaded into other hiccups. I was assigned to one printing facility and had agreed on soft proofs, but they switched me to a different printing facility because of the change in print size and the person there didn't know I had agreed to the soft proofs and send hard proofs instead. The price also went up slightly because of the change in orientation. But overall, like I said, it was pretty painless.

If you're looking at other printers, you might also want to look at regentpublishingservices.com. I met a rep at Comic-con last year and she called me last week. She's going to send me over a resource book so I can take a look at it. I'll probably also send her a request for quote next time I'm ready to print a book.
