ya know, this kind of reminds me of that case not too many years ago about the Texas man (Joe Horn) that shot and killed 2 men that he saw robbing his neighbor's house.

    ...and cleared.
Yeah, at least those guys were actual criminals, but this is why police don't want people feeling like they can act as vigilantes.

Out of the fucking way...this is why I don't go out at night.

I am going to give you all an honest opinion. It's incidents like this that if I am ever anywhere 'dark looking', I won't go out unless I have someone with me because no one will see what's going on. My area is like that and so is my in laws. I get on my wife about walking our dog iearly in the morning because of my fear that if something happens because it's so dark, no one will see anything. It's not just the white guy killing the black guy thing, it's just a simple fact, if you don't see it, it didn't happen. The only thing that will probably send Zimmerman to jail will be the 911 tapes because the first thing that popped up was that it was self defense and had he not called 911 he probably could have had a bigger chance to get away with the crime because listening to the tapes and others that came in, he didn't need to 'defend' himself.

Regardless of whether or not anyone is committing a criminal act, when the cops say let them handle it, it means that they rather have one less body on their hands to handle because some dumb@ss took it upon themselves to investigate.

Yeah, they weren't just innocent bystanders. However, it's a very slippy slop. Anyone see this trailer yet (I understand the social commentary/satyr of this film, but still...there might just be a few idiots out there who see this as affirmation):

Wow. What an awful case. I really hope this idiot gets fully punished for this. It's sad that an unarmed kid gets chased, shot and killed for no Goddamn reason and the person behind it still hasn't been arrested. Sickening. Thanks for posting this, Hooks.

    It's a horrific case.

The "Stand Your Ground" law complicates things, because it's based on what the shooter believes, and in this example, the shooter seems nuts. This is something critics of the law had been afraid of when it was passed.

That said, he initiated the conflict, and is demonstrably a menace to himself and others. There should be a lot of firings over the failure to prosecute.
    Sincerely,

Denny, why did you edit my post to identify him as hispanic as opposed to white? Various news media have identified him as a white man (http://articles.cnn.com/2012-03-12/j...?_s=PM:JUSTICE, for example), and from a quick Google search, his father is white and apparently his mother is half-white half-hispanic (not from a confirmed source).

Does the one-drop rule apply here? Or should we accurately refer to him as at least half-white?

I don't see how you can claim self defense when you have to run after the person. I'd be okay if they strung this guy up.

Re: The Killing of Treyvon Martin

I caught the end of a story about this on NPR this morning, and it made it sound like the shooting actually occurred inside the neighbor's house (the one who called 911). Anyone know if that's the case?

The police chief's stance of "he's claimed self defense, so we can't charge him until we disprove that" is insane, no matter what the Florida "no retreat" law says. It's a defense to a charge manslaughter/murder, not some hurdle the police must overcome before bringing charges.

This story infuriates me. There's nothing to add because it's all there in the subtext or being said anyway.

I guess the only good thing to take away from this is I'm at least glad I live in a world where's there's outrage over it.
