    Re: Ray's 54th DCU/GrayHaven Megathread - Before WatchmOOMPH!!!

    Sci-fi time!

I edited this volume so some of these stories I've seen quite a bit but I tried to read them fresh eyes, some I honestly did not remember and the ones I really liked the pitches off turned out great

    The old system

    Spoiler:
My good pal Arcadio turns his hand to writing and does a sci-fi horror story. Its a popular genre that a lot of people have mined story from but I think you found an interesting and dark take on this. On the surface its just a pair of astronauts looking for food but then that last panel changes the whole tone. The 'punchline' so to speak is well delivered. I know Arcadio sampled 3 or so different versions of this story and the art on this didn't fare too well but its fine. It tells the story well and its hard to escape the feeling that last panel gives you

    Membryo

    Spoiler:
An interesting idea where memories are traded as easily as you might trade currency these days. Someone chooses to trade the memory of their own birth and seemingly gets a great deal on it. An interesting idea to be sure and I think that this story is the best Arcadio's art has ever looked. The detail on some of those close ups are especially good so major props to him there

Doctor Brick Bravery Spacemen in world enough

    Spoiler:
First time I've seen this story I think. It takes weird Kubrick style sci-fi and makes it work very well. I really enjoyed it and thought the narrative flowed very well with the story. I think they were going for those old movie reel type stories (he didn't get out of the cock a doody car!) and it worked well. I like Johnny's art, definitely not mainstream and perhaps not everyone's cup of tea but I always find it charming to be sure

    Cerclux Instruction manual

    Spoiler:
Really fun tongue in cheek story about what to do in case of a monster attack. Kind of reminded me of that Tokyo episode of the Simpons 'We are experiencing Godzilla related turbulence' and its really funny. Not sci-fi exactly but still brilliantly done and a great idea so I don't care. One of the most original Gathering ideas yet I think and done very well

    Date With a Teenage robot

    Spoiler:
Worst date ever? I'm sure one of us could top this! It's another really good story by Charlie Robinson who handles not only the subject of teenage dating but also prejudiced in a way that is amusing and fun. The last panel just sells the whole thing and the art is just great, you can almost feel the robot girls emotion, just really fun

    Immune

    Spoiler:
Not seen this one at all. For the first time ever a Gathering story with no captions which is really something. Its a really great take on the old 'there's a horrible disease and if you're infected then you'll be left out in the cold' tale. It tells the story of how maybe being perfect or in this case 'immune' can leave you out alone just as much as anything else. Michael's art on this is just great and I'm glad he could pull this one out for us. Hope he's willing to come back at some point when time/circumstance allow. Of course John Jackson Miller can come back any time, goes to show how good he is when he doesn't need a single word to tell a story

    I am (analogue) legend

    Spoiler:
We've all heard the story about machines rising up against their makers (mankind) and taking over the planet. What happens after though? What happens when the machines make their own machines? This is what I think this story is telling us and does so in a great way. I always like stories that this that kind of deal with an interesting premise like intelligent robots fighting against ones that are almost beast like. Really good work and great art again by Chris Page.

    In-between man

    Spoiler:
Little bit of a quantum leap vibe of this one and also getting the feeling of almost a Stephen King like vibe. This is almost the kind of story he'd do in one of his short story collections and its very good. Again like I felt with Jason's story in Myth I feel I'm only getting one small piece of a puzzle and I'd like to see more. It's a good thing, always leave them wanting more and I personally also try to give readers a broad sense of a larger world in my stories too. Arcadio does art again and he's a great fit for a story with this type of feel, I feel sorry for him having to letter all those words in the first panel on that second page though lol

Ptere Bull and the backdoor Boost

    Spoiler:
Don't remember this one at all. This is another story were I'm kind of lost story wise, I feel like I'm missing a page? Maybe I don't know. Intergalactic drunken bar ramblings I guess? More things change and all that. Good art though

    Negative Pressure

    Spoiler:
Here's Kevin and Amanda to give me a warm fuzzy feeling of kittens and candy and.....oh wait. That's mirror universe Kevin and Amanda. Our version likes to do stories that scar me for life (in a good way). Another great story by the pair and I just love the twist at the end. This kind of reminds me a bit of the Apollo 13 movie that was out last year but does it so much better. I'm just glad we get a weekly from these guys cause they're just great and there will no doubt be big things for them both sooner than later

    Not Dead Yet

    Spoiler:
    This story. This story.

Doctor Who, House, Spider-Man, Howlett's cookies

Okay I'm fine I can continue

Okay so it's kind of like a time travel romp gone wrong because the couple going on the trip see the wife get killed in the future. Knowing this will happen their relationship obviously suffers.

    I think

It's an interesting idea for sure, moving on

    The Procedure

    Spoiler:
Really disturbing story about a technology that can bring back the dead for a few minutes so people can gather intel. I've seen it done before in Torchwood and more recently Source Code but its a really chilling concept and its done very well here. I think this is both of these guys first time out of the box and i's a great start for both of them if it is. If it isn't then great job anyway!

    Tic Tac Whoa

    Spoiler:
It's intergalactic tic tac toe brought to you the way only the Goletz kids and Mr. Chamberlain can! Lots of thoughts about what the mysterious crop circles could be but this might be my favorite. Lots of fun here and Chris just really adds a lot of flavor to it as usual.

    Walkthrough

    Spoiler:
Really different story about the lone survivor on a spaceship being guided to safety away from the beings that (presumably) killed everyone else on board. The story flows really well and does a fantastic job keeping the final twist a secret and delivers it home with a really good scene between the main two characters of the story. Great effort by Chris McCarver and absolutely spectacular art in my view by Lovalle Davis, probably some of the best art we've ever seen in this book ever. again the guy killed it not only in the smaller scenes but also the big reveal panel is just astonishing

    Sleep Well

    Spoiler:
We see aliens often cast in the role of the villain or the monster and its nice to see a different take. Recently in film district 9 and Super 8 (a little) tried something similar and I think this story does a fine job of it. Not a lot to it except a lone astronaut not being alone in his final moments and a sympathetic entity helping him along. Simple but effective and a strong end to the volume. Matt Brown's art continues to grow every time I see it.

Very strong volume overall. Some fantastic stories in here. Don't think it quite tops Vol. 6 for me but it comes bloody close. As usual there can only be one favorite.

    Spoiler:
Walkthrough by Chris McCarver and Lovalle Davis. Loved it when I read the pitch, loved it when I read the script and love it even more here. Its one of the best stories I think the Gathering has ever printed. Opinions may very but I really admired the effort on this story a great deal. Fantastic work guys

Gonna show off that Catman tattoo, eh? Considering I flashed her my hip-placed Oracle and BoP tattoos, why not?

I only liked Hal when he and Ollie had their fights. But back in the day I liked Ollie too....

I started reading GL during Kyle's run so I have that bias, but also love Guy.

    Not Joe though...
