Originally after Dick had gone to college and become leader of the Titans he felt he'd outgrown the role and wanted his own identity. The parting with Bruce was amicable and he even offered the Robin name and costume to Jason as a show of good faith.

Morrison reinserted that version into continuity and Lobdell's flashback to Dick's Nightwing days seems to affirm that.
