For years, I've wanted them to get the big guns back into the Justice League and now that they have, it's not very good.
In a nutshell, the problem is twofold. First, there is no story. This first arc had no story. It had a villain. It had heroes. It had battles. But no story. The closest they came was a throwaway line in the fourth or fifth chapter about Darkseid's daughter. Otherwise, it was basically Parademon, Hero, Parademon, Hero, Darkseid, Hero, Hero. Darkseid was wasted. He did nothing. He stood around, said about five lines, and was hastily dispatched. Jack Kirby made the Fourth World vibrate with energy. Geoff Johns made it dull. So that's one problem.
The other problem? These aren't the characters you want to read. Somewhere along the way, this idea took root that people don't want to see icons, they want to see younger, brasher, cockier, angrier heroes become icons. Which I don't buy one bit. People know Superman. They know Batman. They know Wonder Woman. That's what they want. This doesn't feel like Superman. This doesn't feel like Flash. Green Lantern has turned into the Jimmy from Seinfeld, talking about himself in the third person and repeating the same thing over and over again ("We got this! Green Lantern can take care of this!"). Wonder Woman is dull as a brick. Cyborg is treated as a paper thin character. Batman is okay, but off.
It just isn't good. Even the character dynamics aren't good. It just feels wrong. It's not the worst Justice League comics I've ever read, but I want to read icons being heroes. Whatever this is, it isn't that. Honestly, this reads to me like Geoff Johns sat in a meeting with two suits from the marketing department, three editors, and three suits from licensing and was basically given marching orders. "Here's what we need you to write to push this product and sell this hype." It's frustrating.
I haven't even gotten to the Shazam thing yet.
