    Joe Paterno dies at 85

How do you think this will affect the Penn State investigations?

I had this feeling all along that he would die within months of the end of his career. He seemed like one of those people who was inextricably linked to his job. As far as the investigation goes, I don't think this will have a huge impact on it. People already seemed like they were trying to keep him out of it anyway.

Hopefully, not too much since Paterno already gave sworn testimony. But I can very well see the Penn State officials saying "well, we didn't know how serious it was because Joe didn't tell us."

I don't think it will affect Sandusky's criminal trial. But it may affect the one of the PSU officials and civil suits brought for liability.

Well, IIRC he had recently been diagnosed with lung cancer. I know they said it was "treatable" but really.... lung cancer is pretty serious business. That, combined with everything else may have been enough to just overrun his system.

I'm sorry his family has lost him -- no matter what he may or may not have done it's always devestating to lose a husband and a father.

I agree, but I think it's likely that the stress from the investigation played role in it. I think I remember hearing that he was already sick before this happened, but it can't have helped. Stress really can wreak havoc on your body, especially if you're already sick.

MOre likely, he hated having to retire. Apparently, he was obsessed w/the fact that Bear Bryant also died very soon after leaving coaching.

I do dislike the stories that say "well, he did a bad thing but...look at all the people he helped!"

Yeah, and look at the number of children who will have to live with what Sandusky did with the knowledge that the legendary coach who was supposed to be such a great teacher stood by and did nothing.

*wince* Yeah, it's tough to reconcile the positive stuff he accomplished with being complicit in something as terrible as child sexual abuse, but ignoring it is not the way to go.

I am happy for his legacy that the scandal broke before he died.

because he was able to address it. . . his legacy would be much more badly tarred if he had passed prior to the scandal breaking. . there would be no way to hear anything from him about it. And NO comment would just make things even worse in people's minds, as far as his involvement went.

Oh, I absolutely agree, the stress probably was detrimental to his health.

but I try to keep in mind, he's not the evil bastard here. Yes, he potentially enabled the evil, but Sandusky is the one that needs to be punished severely.

    anyways. .my two cents.
