I don't think he can/will. Newt is still there and he will find a way to re-insert him into the anti-romney spot for while. When Romney finally gets the nomination he'll still try and throw himself at the less desirable elements of the right.

That's why Newt staying in (if he does) would be so potentially damaging to Romney. He could keep Mittens from etch-a-sketching back to the center till August. By then, some of those opinions will be solidified.
