Hasn't its "popularity" been about the same since 07? It's getting more exposure lately which could indicate he is either watching the polls, as you say or that the increased exposure is giving him an opportunity to seriously reflect on the matter. I think the former is more cynical than the latter, but has as good a chance of being the case.

He strikes me as a very intelligent, analytical guy and there's not much to think about here. It's safe to assume that he knows what is right but he's doing what is practical, and I can't entirely fault him for it. Here's a snippet of the polls. Note that it wasn't until early 2011 that he started "evolving":

I'd want to see this trend reflected in another poll before I'd put much stock into it. Besides, that is a huge number of undecideds.

I doubt Gingrich can convince millionaires to continue donations to a consistent third-place candidate. Romney and Santorum would have to fall into space for him to rise in the polls. He's pulling Rick Perry numbers now. He has zero residual big-media exposure. It's ovah.

Although I could see him coming out for gay marriage in a second term. I think it's more likely that he'll endorse the SC ruling on the issue if it comes to that.

He has passed a ton of shit he personally doesn't believe in. Mostly as a compromise to people who will never give him credit for it. Say what you will about Obama, he's proven himself to be a guy that can put his own personal beliefs aside if he thinks it'll benefit the country in the long-term. I don't think he will allow his belief in civil unions over gay marriage to influence his decision over whether or not there should be gay marriages.
