I hope they produce a high quality pilot and that it becomes a series.
I really don't know or care much about the current GA series or this proposed TV show so it doesn't really matter to me, TBH.
I hope they produce a high quality pilot and that it becomes a series.
Another difference is that WB/CW allowed the Bruce Timm and Co. group to get away with a LOT of stuff I don't know if Disney would let Marvel get away with.
"Batman: the Animated Series" actually had quite a bit of violence and some disturbig imagery that, if you listen to interviews and commentary tracks guys like Bruce Timm and Paul Dini are always saying "Man, I can't believe we got away with that!"
"Superman: The Animated Series" featured character death -- "The Late Mr. Kent" (my favorite episode BTW) had a character sitting in the death chamber and went to black JUST as the criminal was about to be put to death. The familiar supporting character of Dan Turpin was murdered, on screen, by Darkseid.
"Justice League" and "Justice League Unlimited" was pretty open with sexuality -- several characters were obviously in sexual, romantic relationships,' there was character death, and Deadman possessed Batman in order to basically kill a guy in cold blood.
The last time I remember Disney being 'adult' was with "Gargoyles" -- which also featured character death; complex characters who were often a combination of good and evil, a racially mixed main character who was also in an... inter.... something relationship with the Goliath. Now THAT was daring.
So I think it's important to give WB credit not just for the LOOK of their animated series but often how willing they were to do serious stories with adult themes and not shy away from them or back down from them.

I'm glad that DC's reboot is a massive success but it still stings that characters like Connor Hawke and Mia Derden didn't get a proper ending.
Part of that, I also think was them thankfully getting their animation onto CN. Timm was quite adamant that they would not have gotten away with half the things they did in JL and JLU had it aired on the WB's kid's block, which eventually grew quite ridiculous in regards to the restrictions put on the shows. Look at the stuff they were allowed to do in those shows or even The Brave and the Bold and YJ vs. what was allowed in The Batman.
And DC's straight to DVD program has had some real gems too.
The comic writers of the future who read comics with Connor hawke and Mia when they were younger will find away to bring them back. It's the same with Wally West, people love the character, and someone will find away to bring him back soon enough. I mean you see writers like Morrison and Robinson bring obscure characters they read as lads back into comics, so it's going to be the same with future writers.

Whatever happened to that proposed Fortress-like prison movie? The one where they wanted to use another superhero (Batman I think), and ended up focusing on Green Arrow and the hero trapped in a prison full of super-villains. Does anybody else remember this idea when it was pitched and being considered for production a few years back?
