Civil War at least could be read on it's own without too much hassle.

That's the main thing that Marvel always does better than DC with all their events though. I can grab just the House Of M, Civil War, Secret Invasion, Siege, Fear Itself hardcovers off the shelf, read just those, no tie-ins whatsoever, and get a complete story, and understand that complete story all on its own. I don't feel that I can do that with Infinite Crisis, Final Crisis, Blackest Night, Flashpoint.

Really? The Final Crisis hardcover has all the issues including Superman Beyond for the complete story. Blackest Night could be read without any tie-ins, and Flashpoint as well.

BN had the Lantern mythology in the tie-ins sure. But Flashpoint told its complete story, while character stories were optional.
