Shakespeare in Love was a cute little romantic comedy dressed up in Shakespeare. That year remains the single nastiest slap in the face the Oscars have ever given, and apparently they didn't like all the negative press they got over it.

Nah, I think Ordinary People beating Raging Bull is still the all-time biggest pimpslap.

I'd say the real rival is Kramer vs. Kramer beating Apocalypse Now. But there's no question those three are on top.

Although it's not one specific year, but 3-time Director's Guild Nominee Christopher Nolan being a zero-time Oscar nominee is starting to feel incredibly malicious, more than any of those. It's clearly some sort of vendetta.

Even with LOTR - the first one was considered amazing, as was the second, and both years it lost to weak competition. They finally rewarded it the third year, but I feel like it was mainly because they ran out of excuses.

Which is why I thought the final Potter flick might get 1 of a possible 10 noms as a nod to it's quality over a series of very well made and entertaining films.

That and Crash over Brokeback Mountain, in my opinion. Despite all the jokes it brought, the actual Brokeback Mountain film was something special.

It's also widely believed that Jermy Irons Oscar for Reversal of Fortune was largely based on not getting an Oscar for his rivetting performance in Dead Ringers. (Which creeped the hell out of me.)

This confuses me. Director's Guild nominees are from other directors, right? I always thought that leading up to the nominations, that for the Oscars that actors nominated actors, editors nominated editors, sound editors nominated sound editors, ect, then everyone nominates for Best Picture and then once the nominations are out, everyone votes for all the nominees. In that case (unless I'm wrong) why isn't Nolan also being nominated by his director peers for an Oscar?
