I think Avengers really needs one more trailer to get people super excited.

Regardless, DKR will rule all. Yeah, Ledger's death boosted TDK a bit, but that movie was genuinely good and people loved it for that. Plus Nolan's stock has only risen since then with Inception.
When Joe Public thinks of Nolan, they think INCEPTION (which is in the popular lexicon) and THE DARK KNIGHT.

THE DARK KNIGHT RISES had the most downloaded trailer OF ALL TIME. I don't think there's any question if it will win.

Okay, yeah, it'll do a bit better than I thought. If nothing else, people will probably take it a bit more seriously than the last one.

As for The Avengers, I think you're overestimating how much Joe Public will actually care about a superhero team-up. The return of Tony Stark/Iron Man will be of most interest to people.
Willis isn't shown until the very end of the trailer.

...and then there's the ALIEN prequel, PROMETHEUS.

And FINDING NEMO 3D. And ICE AGE 4.

Jesus fuck. Everything after THE DARK KNIGHT RISES is a toss up.

Dark Knight is too easy a choice. I'll go with The Hobbit instead.

And if Elysium wasn't pushed back to early '13, that could have been in contention too...

Besides: when was the last time a film that debuted during the July 4th week flopped?
Nope. I don't have anything to add, just nope. Think Fantastic Four 2 numbers.

Re: 2012 Films: Box Office Predictions

I don't think 3D re-releases should be in contention. If a movie is released on December 31, 2009, you don't count it's gross as a 2010 release. So why would you count a 1997 release as a 2012 release?

Also, no re-release has a shot at winning the annual box office.

So G.I. JOE: RETALIATION will be the first movie debuting over Independence Day holiday since 1994 not to do big numbers, even though the critically-panned first film performed better (domestically) than X-MEN: FIRST CLASS?

    Okay!

THE WOLVERINE was also pushed back. IIRC, it was originally supposed to debut at the end of this year.
