Yeah, it would have to outperform any other movie in the series by over 100 million. Even Harry Potter didn't manage that for its last one.

This will perform pretty much exactly like the last three, maybe with a slight boost.

Like I said, the Hobbit's biggest advantage is being the only huge movie released in December, while almost all the others are crowded into the hypercompetitive summer marketplace

Were it not for that, I'd likely go TDKR.

1 through 3 will be Dark Knight Rises, Hobbit and Avengers. Probably in that order. DKR and Hobbit will be battling it out for #1.

The movies being re-done for 3D will hopefully tank, but they'll more than likely pull in a decent week one. Depending on when they come out and the movies being released that week, they probably will not be #1.

Anyway, Avengers might sneak in since they're out of the gate first (I'm not including the re-releases) in early May and because it'll have no stiff competition ("The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel"?) immediately. It'll have 2 weeks before Battleship comes out, followed by MiB3 a week after that. However, when DKR comes out, there is NO real stiff competition for it for weeks. Spider-Man comes out 2 weeks prior to DKR's release. After DKR, the next potential "big release" is 2 weeks later and it's Bourne Legacy, but I doubt it puts a big dent in DKR's box office. Then maybe Expendables 2 could hurt DKR a bit... Basically, when DKR comes out, it'll pretty much have a clear run of the box office with possibly little to knock it out of #1 for weeks.

The thing is, The Hobbit does not come out until December 14th. The holiday season is always tricky.

Are the Hobbit and Avengers gonna be in 3D? That should boost their numbers, perhaps to surpass DKR (though I doubt even then).

Yes, although in very different ways. Avengers is getting the (usually lame) post-conversion treatment while Hobbit is being filmed in 3D (at 5k resolution and 48fps).
