You're right, she is there. So then the in-story reason for Rachel not going being involved in the Utopia battle is that she's staying back at the Grey school protecting the kids, like Wolverine told all the staff to do.

Right. I was just wondering if they explained elsewhere why Wolverine did that. Leaving his Phoenix expert at home doesn't seem like a good idea to me.

It could be that Wolverine wants to protect her but Rachel has never been someone who avoids danger.

But why does she need to be there? People are jumping up and down about continuity, but what about recent continuity? Wolverine started this school to let the X-Men be teachers again and help raise and protect the next generation of mutants. So why would he take members of his staff into this giant apocalyptic superhero war? Rachel isn't bonded to the Phoenix Force anymore, and it's pretty easy to imagine that she's debriefed him and Beast totally on it.
Like, how would this story be helped by Rachel Summers reminding everyone again that she had the Phoenix Force? Does Cyclops's current persona seem like he'd be listening to her?

Comic books have too many shades of gray now if my nephew has to pick up an issue of AVX and have to consider that the paranoid and militant mutant madman who wants his own nuclear bomb that could go off at any minute and kill everybody is one of the good guys to root for.
Technically its supposed to burn away what doesn't work to help something new and better to grow.

They should have shown at least one planet get spared to get that point across. Think of it like death. It isn't bad but necessary.

I think it's important enough that it should be addressed with a few lines of dialogue. For me it's getting the details right that makes a good story great.

Rick Remember is great at it, I'm loving his Uncanny X-Force run because he gets all the little things right. Same with Jason Aaron on 'Wolverine and the X-Men', he's been brilliant so far at giving us insane stories with huge casts while still managing to focus on all the little things.

Does Rachel need to be consulted? No. It seems odd that she hasn't been though. It's like when Bendis was writing the scene where Cap and Cyclops were talking on the beach in AvX #1. Bendis wrote a few lines of dialogue for Namor in that scene because it makes sense that Namor would offer advice in that situation. Bendis didn't 'need' to do that but Namor and Cap have a lot of history and Bendis acknowledging that is one of those details that improves the story.

Okay, I understand and agree with a lot of what you're saying (especially re: Remender and UXF) but also, the story just started. I'd be surprised if Rachel's Phoenix history doesn't get touched on in at least one of the X-Men tie-ins.

Just read issue two and really enjoyed it.

What did Cyclops do to Wolverine? Did he actually whip his eye beams? Never seen that one before.

That's Jerome Opena? Out of control.

I was wondering if it was even worth checking out.
