    Retail Therapy

I admit it. I have a soft spot for shopping. Sue me.

    ...OR JOIN ME.

What bargains have you scored? (Thrift store and consignment shopping especially appreciated.) What do you covet?

I haven't had the time or money to shop for me lately (though I did come home from the consignment shop's 50% off everything sale on Saturday with two bags of clothes for the kids). Share your scores and let me enjoy a contact high, will you?

Oh, wait! I also got a wooden doll crib for Tallulah off Craigslist for $20 yesterday. Looking for a wooden dollhouse next...

With the internet the thrill of the hunt has deminished for me. It is hard to not find what you NEED for a pretty fair price. That does not mean I don't like the art of aquisition. Comics are my joy, that is what draws my pocketbook. I'd say my highs there is a set of Miracleman tpbs, a copy of Strange Adventures 205 and a copy of Flash 123.

The sparkle in the back of my eye would be Adventure Comics 61 someday it will be mine, just completing my Starman first appearance collection.

Black Friday weekend was rough. SO MANY BLU RAYS.

Suzan, my girlfriend, just started working at a local vintage store. So far, she's bought:
    - a 1920's tails coat that fits her perfectly
    - a Laura Ashley (Australian label from the 70s/80s) floral dress
    - an orange, brown and white striped 70s dress that was made here (in Canberra - a town not well know for its garment production)
    - and a blue and white moo moo.

She gets a thirty percent discount and has about ten hours to go to pay it all off.

Previously, from the same store, I bought a 70s three piece grey suit (incredible flares, that I considered having re-tailored until I realised how All The President's Men it was), and a dinner suit/tux.

Place is nuts, girl who started it basically had to because she couldn't fit any more of her personal collection in her house.

    Re: Retail Therapy

on Black Friday (the U.S. version of Boxing Day) I took advantage of discount coupons and "store-bucks" at the Columbia flagship store in Portland and bought a truck's worth of books at Powell's. Getting this all home was a challenge but managed. Since then, I've just been watching the papers and blackfriday.com for deals and more percentage off coupons. The biggest windfall was in the form of credit card rebates and "points" that we converted to actual cash and/or gift cards. Since Susan is insistent on paying off the cards each month, it really is like found money. The key, as stated, is paying off the suckers when due each month.

There's been quite a bit of internet and catalog shopping but only when I can get free shipping. Although it would be nice to actually wrap some of these goodies ourselves, I've opted to mostly have the gifts shipped directly to the recipient's homes. Not as personal, but shipping a gift is sometimes more expensive than the thing itself!

Susan's big gift is a fancy bracelet that was purchased over time, interest-free. If you can discipline yourself, you really can take advantage of retailer's and creditor's money. Discipline is key to making it all work. Oh yeah, we built the purchase into the budget to lessen the pain.

Not only do I love the hunt of the gift, but I love the game of leveraging the purchase as well.

I bought a Hexbug Nano playset for my three-year-old. This is because he knows about the toys hidden in the basement. I was able to get $400 worth of Star Wars vehicles and figures for $100 on Craigslist.

Terry, you have to teach me how to love paying off a credit card. This, I think, could be the greatest trick ever...

It's all about using their money for a few weeks. Imseriouslynthinkmthe credit card companies hate customers like me. Oh yeah, you need someone like Susan to keep your ass in line. She's very good at that as well as having a running total in her head how much has been charged this month. Nick, I kid you not.

Heh, I think this is part of where I fall down - horrible maths/estimation.
